Nothing made a bunch of announcements today. Stand-out among them was the official name drop of its next smartphone. The phone will be called Phone 2a, after all. And the way that Nothing describes it, it is all but obvious that the Phone 2a is its answer to— or at least an equivalent of— the OnePlus Nord line-up of devices, especially the core edition models. (Here’s a quick history lesson for tech nerds: the first Nord was Nothing chief Carl Pei’s last product launch at OnePlus.)
“Phone 2a has been engineered with a focus on providing the optimal daily smartphone experience,” Nothing said in a prepared statement, adding that it is “doubling down on core user needs, with all of Nothing’s expertise and craftsmanship” for its upcoming smartphone.
The Phone 2a will leverage “some of the most loved Phone 2 features, while ensuring a clear upgrade compared to Phone 1 on every front,” Nothing further said without sharing any concrete details about the hardware, or even the design. The device is codenamed Aerodactyl and is widely anticipated to launch sometime around the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in late February.
Rumours that Nothing was working on Phone 2a have been doing the rounds of the internet for sometime. Purported renders have hinted toward a redesigned chassis while another set of leaks have tipped an under Euro 400 price tag for a Nothing Phone 2a version with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage which falls right under Rs 40,000 when converted to INR.
The Phone 1 was Euro 469 at launch while the Phone 2 was launched at Euro 679 and so, it goes without saying that the Phone 2a could stand as the new entry-point for customers wanting to get onboard the Nothing brandwagon in which case, the reported 120Hz AMOLED display, MediaTek Dimensity 7200 chip, and 50-megapixel main camera paired with Nothing’s “think different” design add up for an interesting proposition.
Elsewhere, the brand’s CMF spin-off is gearing to launch a couple of more affordable products namely the CMF Buds and CMF Neckband Pro soon. The two devices are confirmed to launch in India, as is the Phone 2a. Watch this space for more details.
