Samsung is expected to launch a few new Android phones in the second half of 2021 — one of which being the Galaxy Z Flip 3. The Z Flip 3 will be a successor to last year’s Galaxy Z Flip and Z Flip 5G, marking Samsung’s third attempt at a vertical-flipping handset.
The Galaxy Z Flip was the first smartphone of its kind to launch in the U.S. Where the Z Fold and other foldables focus on offering a phone and tablet experience in one device, the Z Flip was essentially a modern recreation of the flip phone. It looked like a normal Android handset at first glance, but it could be folded in half to become much more portable in the blink of an eye. The Z Flip was widely considered a successful product for Samsung when it launched in February 2020, and just a few months later in August, the Z Flip 5G came out with a few welcome spec bumps. For 2021, the Z Flip series is going to get its biggest update yet.
The main reason for this is because of the Galaxy Z Flip 3’s rumored design. The Z Flip and Z Flip 5G looked virtually identical to one another, but the Z Flip 3 will likely usher in an all-new aesthetic. Official-looking product renders of the Z Flip 3 were leaked by GizNext on June 29, 2021, showcasing a few notable changes compared to its predecessors. The back of the phone features a two-tone design — consisting of a black upper portion and a handful of different color options below that. Samsung will reportedly offer eight colors for folks to choose from, including black, white, gray, dark green, light violet, beige, dark blue, and pink. Also present on the back of the Z Flip 3 is the larger 1.9-inch cover display, which is a considerable upgrade compared to the 1.1-inch panel from the Z Flip and Z Flip 5G. The primary display is expected to be the same size at 6.7-inches, though the selfie camera will be placed underneath it instead of in a hole-punch cutout.
Galaxy Z Flip 3 Specs, Price, And Release Date
In regards to specifications that’ll be present on the Z Flip 3, all signs point to it getting the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor — the same one found on the Galaxy S21, OnePlus 9 Pro, and other flagship phones released in 2021. The above renders reveal that the Z Flip 3 will once again come with two rear cameras. While specifics for these remain unclear, one possibility is that Samsung will pull from sensors it used on the Galaxy S21. If that’s the case, the Z Flip 3 could get a 12MP primary camera and 12MP ultra-wide camera. A February report from SamMobile suggested the Z Flip 3 will be available in 128 and 256GB storage variants, at least 6GB of RAM is a safe bet, and rumor has it the Z Flip 3 will have a larger battery compared to the Z Flip and Z Flip 5G’s 3,300 mAh capacity.
Where things get tricky is when trying to nail down the Galaxy Z Flip 3’s price. Early reports suggested the phone would be available for as little as $999, but when GizNext leaked the above product renders, it claimed the Z Flip 3 will cost $1,400. For some context, the original Z Flip launched at $1,380 and the Z Flip 5G had a starting retail price of $1,449 (then being cut to $1,199 in February 2021). A $1,400 price seems much more likely for the Galaxy Z Flip 3, but as with all of this, nothing is official until Samsung says so itself.
As for when Samsung will give that confirmation, there’s not too much longer to wait. Some sources say the Z Flip 3 will be announced in July, others say it won’t be until August, and that’s where things stand right now. While it may be disappointing not to have a solid date to look forward to, it’s clear that a new folding phone from Samsung will be here before the summer is over.
