Sony to buy 'Halo' videogame creator Bungie in $3.6 billion deal - Economic Times

Sony Interactive Entertainment will acquire "Halo" and "Destiny" videogame creator Bungie Inc in a deal valued at $3.6 billion, making it the latest in a wave of consolidation sweeping the gaming sector.

Early in January, Microsoft Corp offered nearly $70 billion to buy "Call of Duty" maker Activision Blizzard , while "Grand Theft Auto" maker Take-Two bid $11 billion for "Farmville" maker Zynga.

Bellevue, Washington-based Bungie, which worked on the "Halo" videogame series when owned by Microsoft, separated from the software giant to go private in 2007. It has worked on a number of titles including "Marathon" and "Myth" and will be joining Sony's PlayStation lineup, the company said in a blog.

The acquisition will allow the PlayStation console maker to reach more players with new games in a competitive space where it is toe-to-toe with Microsoft's Xbox consoles.

"This is an important step in our strategy to expand the reach of PlayStation to a much wider audience," said Jim Ryan, who heads Sony Corp's unit which is responsible for the PlayStation brand.

The video game space is consolidating rapidly to tap a surge in demand created by the pandemic, with new deals blurring the lines between PC and mobile gaming companies as these firms hunt for new revenue streams.

The sector is racing to a new record of $150 billion in deals, financing and IPOs this year, according to investment banking firm Drake Star Partners.

Sony Interactive Entertainment acquired six gaming companies in 2021, including "God of War" maker Valkyrie Entertainment.

Bungie will be an independent unit of Sony Interactive Entertainment and run by its board chaired by CEO Pete Parsons and team.

Flipkart Electronics Sale: Get iPhone 12 Mini for as low as Rs 25,149, here`s how - Zee News

New Delhi: The Electronics Offer, Flipkart's most recent sale, is now live on the e-commerce website. The Flipkart Electronics Sale includes a slew of deals and offers on smartphones such as Apple's iPhone, Motorola's Moto G51 5G, Realme GT Neo 2, and many others. The discount, which began on January 27, will continue until January 31. While there are a bevy of devices available at great prices during the sale, the bargain on the iPhone 12 Mini has everyone's attention.

During the Flipkart sale, the iPhone 12 Mini is priced at Rs 41,999 for the 64GB storage model. When compared to the smartphone's Rs 59,900 retail price, this is a much lower pricing. Above that, consumers can get a Rs 1,000 discount if they use a Citi Bank credit or debit card to buy the iPhone 12 Mini, bringing the price down to Rs 40,999. Above this, there is an exchange offer of up to Rs 15,850 on the iPhone 12 Mini, bringing the smartphone's price down to Rs 25,149, which almost sounds too good to be true. As a result, we attempted to purchase an iPhone 12 Mini to see how true this is.

So we attempted to trade in a 2019 OnePlus 7 Pro 8GB RAM model for an iPhone 12 Mini. The OnePlus 7 Pro costs Rs 14,900 on Flipkart, which brings the price of the iPhone 12 Mini down to Rs 27,099 - a Rs 32,801 savings off the smartphone's sticker price of Rs 59,900! We didn't have a Citi bank credit card, so we couldn't obtain the Rs 1,000 extra discount, but we were still able to get our hands on an iPhone Mini for Rs 27,099, which is ridiculously low when compared to the smartphone's quoted price of Rs 41,999.

The 128GB model of the iPhone 12 Mini can be obtained for Rs 40,099 by swapping an 8GB RAM variant of the 2019 OnePlus 7 Pro for the 128GB variant of the iPhone 12 Mini. This bargain will be available until January 31, so those interested in purchasing a new iPhone should take advantage of it before it expires.

After Instagram, Apple iPad app next? Here is what WhatsApp chief Will Cathcart said - HT Tech

Like Instagram for the iPad, a version of WhatsApp for Apple iPad has long eluded users despite being a heavily requested feature.

Whatsapp's chief has recently revealed that they are in favour of releasing an iPad app. "People have wanted an iPad app for a long time," Will Cathcart, the head of WhatsApp at its parent company Meta, told The Verge during an interview this week. "We'd love to do it," Cathcart added. Like Instagram for the iPad, a version of WhatsApp for Apple's tablet has long eluded users despite being a heavily requested feature.

While Cathcart wouldn't go so far as to commit to the release of an iPad version, his comments suggest it's possible that one will be built in the near future, especially now that WhatsApp has built the underlying technology needed for such a client to work.

"We did a lot of work on the technology for supporting multiple devices," Cathcart said, referencing the rollout of opt-in, multi-device support for WhatsApp last year.

"Our web and our desktop apps now have that. If I have multi-device on, I can turn my phone off or lose my network connection and still get messages on my desktop. That would be really important for a tablet app, to be able to use the app even if your phone isn't on. So the underlying technology is there," he shared.

Because of the way WhatsApp encrypts messages, it historically hasn't been able to sync chats across devices over the internet like most other messaging apps work. So if WhatsApp on your phone didn't have access to the internet, the desktop client didn't work.

The beta version of multi-device support lets you sync your WhatsApp account on up to four devices at a time, a process that involves mapping device identifiers to an account key on WhatsApp's servers in a way that's still encrypted.

Now that such syncing technology exists, there's a good chance that WhatsApp for iPad is finally on the horizon.

Facebook Messenger groups now have end-to-end encryption for calls, chats

(ANI): Facebook Messenger has added a string of new features recently. The features that users have received include end-to-end encryption, screenshot detection, message reactions, typing indicators, among several others.

Messenger added end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) chatting in 2016 when it was still called Facebook Messenger, and Meta was still Facebook.

Now many things have changed, but the optional feature is fully rolled out to everyone, with toggles to encrypt text messages as well as group chats and calls, reported The Verge.

Meta has discussed switching to E2EE as a default, but that may not happen until next year at the earliest, as some regulators claim this would harm public safety.

There are two ways Messenger users can opt in to the secure chats, either via vanish mode, by swiping up on an existing chat to enter one where messages automatically disappear when the window is closed or the original version that was introduced in 2016 as Secret Conversations. You can turn that on by toggling the lock icon when you start a new chat.

In addition to a full rollout of the feature, Messenger has some new features to enable as well. Now, in end-to-end encrypted chats, you can use GIFs, stickers, reactions, and long-press to reply or forward messages.

The encrypted chats also now support verified badges so that people can identify authentic accounts. You can also save media exchanged in the chats, and there's a Snapchat-style screenshot notification that will be rolling out over the next few weeks.

The screenshot detection feature and the message reactions feature is something WhatsApp users have been waiting to get for a long time. However, now that Facebook has made the features available to Messenger, they may soon be unveiled on WhatsApp as well.

All the new features will be rolled out to Messenger in the coming weeks.

Earlier this month, Telegram ‘translate’ feature was added and it allows users to read any message on the platform. Know here how to translate Telegram messages.

Earlier in January, the messaging app Telegram rolled out a new update that added an in-app translation feature to the platform. After the update, users will be able to read any message in either groups or chat in their preferred language. This Telegram feature is available for both Android and iOS. Telegram translate feature was aimed to increase the usability and accessibility of the app for users. Telegram’s platform is already feature heavy and has options not available on its rival WhatsApp. Some of the features of Telegram missing in WhatsApp include restricting message forwarding in groups, sending large files up to 2GB and anonymous posting. Now, another addition to the list will be message translation. If you want to know how to translate any message on Telegram, then read on.

The new update of Telegram, which was the 12th update since its official release, was rolled out on January 2, 2022. Apart from in-app translation, it also added other features. Now, a user can double tap a message to send a quick reaction. On iOS, users can long press the message to get quick reactions. In settings, users can also change their default reaction to a particular emoji. Apart from this, Telegram also added a new feature that enables users to hide a part or an entire message as spoilers. This will make the message or the part of it hidden. Users, when ready for the spoiler, can tap on it to see the message.

Valve’s Steam Deck will start shipping to buyers in February - XDA Developers

Valve made plenty of people excited when it announced the Steam Deck last year, a Nintendo Switch-like handheld console with the hardware and software of a PC. Following a few delays, Valve revealed on Wednesday that it will start shipping the Steam Deck starting next month

A new post on the Steam page for the Steam Deck reads, “the day is almost here! On February 25th, we will be sending out the first batch of order emails to reservation holders. Customers will have 3 days (72 hours) from receipt of their order email to make their purchase, before their reservation is released to the next person in the queue. The first units will be on their way to customers starting the 28th, and we plan to release new order email batches on a weekly cadence.”

Valve has been accepting reservations for the Steam Deck since July of last year, which required a $5 deposit through the Steam Store. People with reservations will start receiving invitations to complete their purchase shortly after 10 AM Pacific Time on February 25, and the invitations will be sent in the same order the reservations will made — for example, if you were one of the first to place a deposit after the announcement, you’ll probably get an email before the end of February.

The company also said in its announcement that Steam Deck buyers won’t be able to change their reservation to a different hardware configuration. If you had second thoughts about buying the cheapest model, and you want to change your order, you’ll have to move to the back of the line.

Valve has been hard at work on the Steam Deck’s software, which is based on Linux and can play select Windows-only games through the Proton compatibility layer. There are also plenty of Linux-native games available on Steam, most of which should be playable on the Steam Deck.

iPhone SE 2020 gets a massive price cut on Flipkart: Check whether you should buy it or not in 2022 - Zee News

New Delhi: Even after the Flipkart Big Saving Days deal ended on January 22, Apple's 'cheap' iPhone SE (2020) is still available with a discount. Currently, the 64GB variant costs Rs 29,999 (MRP Rs 39,900), while the 128GB model costs Rs 34,999. (MRP Rs 44,900). Apple also offers a 256GB storage option, which is no longer available on its Indian website. Flipkart is selling it for Rs 44,999 (MRP Rs 54,900). Customers can, as usual, reduce the discounted price by taking advantage of an exchange offer of up to Rs 15,850. Customers should be aware, however, that exchange offers may not always operate as advertised on e-commerce sites, and you may receive very little or no value for your old smartphone.

According to Flipkart, my four-year-old iPhone 7, which is still in good working order, is worth Rs 8,000 in exchange. That means, excluding bank discounts, the base model may be purchased for as little as 21,999. The iPhone SE (2020) has a 4.7-inch Retina display with HD resolution, 12MP primary camera, 7MP selfie camera, water and dust resistance, wireless charging capability, and a fingerprint scanner on paper. Most importantly, it is equipped with the same chipset as the iPhone 11 series.

The iPhone SE 2020 came with iOS 13 out of the box when it was released. It can currently run the iPhone 15's newest version, which offers a slew of privacy features and widgets. When it comes to software updates, Apple is extremely dependable, with iPhones receiving updates every 4-6 years on average. That means the iPhone SE 2020 will have access to the most up-to-date iOS features until at least 2024. Newer upgrades, on the other hand, have a tendency to impair battery life, which is a regular issue with Apple iPhones.

Simply said, if you're fine with owning a small 4.7-inch screen phone for the next two to four years with a likely battery drainage issue, the iPhone SE 2020 could be your best friend. The phone, however, will miss some of the most recent (read: basic) technology found on newer iPhones and more cheap Android phones. Users should also be aware that the new iPhone SE 2022 is expected to be released in the first half of this year.

WhatsApp chat transfers from Android to iPhone coming soon - BGR

WhatsApp chat transfer is one of many annoying things you have to worry about when upgrading your smartphone. It’s not a real issue if you’re staying on the same operating system. You should have no problem backing up all of your data when upgrading from one iPhone to another. The same goes for Android. But if you routinely jump from Android to iPhone and vice versa, then things start to get more complicated. There are apps that move most of your data from Android to iPhone or the other way around. But WhatsApp chat transfers don’t work that way. Thankfully, WhatsApp has started addressing the matter. After recently adding support for iPhone to Android chat transfers, the company might soon let users move all of their conversations from Android to iPhone as well.

WhatsApp launched chat transfers from iPhone to Android last year. The feature was only available on Galaxy phones initially. Then Google’s Pixel handsets got support for WhatsApp chat transfers from iPhone.

Facebook supporting iPhone-to-Android upgrades seemed logical considering Facebook’s adversarial stance towards Apple. We had no idea at the time when support from Android to iPhone chat transfer would arrive. But it may arrive sooner than expected.

WABetaInfo posted information about new WhatsApp functionality inside Android last week. According to the site, WhatsApp is testing a new version of the app that lets users transfer chats from Android to iPhone. It’s unclear when the feature will roll out to all Android devices. It’s not even out for WhatsApp beta at this time.

How to transfer WhatsApp app chats from iPhone to Android

However, the WhatsApp blog obtained images that explain how the functionality might work. To transfer your chat history from Android to iPhone, you’ll have to give the phones permission to import chats.

Furthermore, the screens above say that WhatsApp will inform users to keep their phones unlocked and the app in the foreground as the data transfer is underway.

It’s unclear whether Android users will have to use Apple’s Move to iOS in combination with the WhatsApp chat transfer tool. The WABetaInfo blog says that Move to iOS might be required.

Move to iOS is unable to transfer WhatsApp history, as it is now. But it’s an app that will let you move plenty of personal data from Android to iPhone.

Not being able to transfer WhatsApp chat histories from one phone to the other with ease is a security feature. It ensures that other people won’t move your WhatsApp account to a different phone. In connection with end-to-end encryption, this helps safeguard your data.

Moreover, WhatsApp’s encryption might stand in the way of transferring chats with ease from Android to iPhone and vice-versa. That’s why you should consider only using the tools available from WhatsApp to move chat histories.

While you wait for WhatsApp to turn on the new functionality, you can check out how the iPhone-to-Android transfer feature works at this link.

WhatsApp desktop app to get two-step verification option soon - Deccan Herald

After getting panned by the customers, media, and government agencies around the world, WhatsApp stalled the revised user privacy policy that mandated users to accept sharing personal and financial details exchanged with them and a business owner on its platform in 2021. Since then, it has worked on assuring users that the personal details exchanged between two private individuals are fully end-to-end encrypted, not even WhatsApp nor any government agencies can track it.

Now, in the latest instance, WhatsApp is testing two-step verification for its desktop app that offers extra security for messenger users, reported community forum WABetaInfo, citing the latest beta app.

Currently, this is available only on iOS and Android mobile apps. As you can see in the beta app’s screenshot, the company has introduced a new option in Settings that allows users to enable two-factor authentication.

This way, users get an additional layer of security. It will particularly come in handy when the user falls victim to a SIM swap scam and compromises the phone mobile number. They can request for reset link and change the PIN/passcode on the web version, thereby blocking WhatsApp account on the lost phone.

In a related development, WhatsApp is also testing chat history transfer from Android to iPhone. Last year, with the launch of Android 12, it had partnered with Google to allow users to transfer chat history from iPhone to Android.

Now, it is preparing to bring the same but in reverse order to help customers to move the WhatsApp data on their old Android phone to their new iPhone.

Google Pixel 6a launch: Specs, features, launch details, expected India price, and everything we know so far - India Today

After the launch of Google’s most premium Pixel 6 series, the focus has now shifted to the company’s affordable offering, Pixel 6a. The device was appearing in the news every now and then, but a launch timeline was not known until now. A fresh leak now suggests that Pixel 6a could launch in the month of May. This is quite early considering the previous launch timelines of Pixel 4a and the Pixel 5a 5G. That said, it is worth noting that the first Pixel 3a was launched in May itself.

The upcoming Google Pixel 6a is tipped to ship with the Tensor chipset featured on the Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6 Pro. However, the camera setup may be similar to the Pixel 5a 5G with dual 12-megapixel cameras. Google is likely to carry the design of the Pixel 6 series on the Pixel 6a as well. With all those rumoured changes, it will be interesting to see if Google keeps the price in check.

While that was a brief introduction of the rumoured Pixel 6a, we have more details to share with you, so let’s get started.

Pixel 6a: Specs and features

--The Pixel 6a is expected to take over the Pixel 5a 5G in the coming months. Tipseter Max Jambor believes that the phone will be launched in the month of May. The two previous Pixel mid-rangers have seen a delayed launch due to the pandemic. Max thinks it is bound to change in 2022 with the early arrival of the Pixel 6a.

--The complete design of the Pixel 6a was revealed in a previous leak. The phone looks exactly the same as the Pixel 6. It has a thick visor shaped camera module with dual cameras and an LED flash. The rear panel seems to have a dual-tone finish with a glass back. There’s no fingerprint scanner for authentication on the rear, so it’s possible that the device may feature an in-display one instead.

Pixel 6a render

--At the front, there's a flat display with a centred punch-hole camera for selfies. The volume rocker and the power button are placed to the right. On the left, there's a SIM card slot. While at the bottom, Pixel 6a has a USB Type-C port, a speaker grille and a microphone. Sadly, the 3.5mm audio jack is missing, which has been part of all the midrange Pixels.

--According to the leak, Pixel 6a measures 152.2 x 71.8 x 8.7 mm. This form factor is smaller than what we get on the Pixel 6 and the Pixel 5a 5G. So we are likely to see a 6.2-inch OLED panel with a 90Hz/120Hz high refresh rate. Rumours suggest that Google Pixel 6a will be powered by the company’s custom GS-101 Tensor chipset that powers the Google Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6 Pro.

--The Google Pixel 6a could be offered in two configurations - one with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage and another with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage.

--Google has been using the same cameras on the Pixel phones for years, but that changed with the Pixel 6 series. While it would have been nice to see upgraded cameras on the Google Pixel 6a, leaks suggest that it will carry the same camera system as the Pixel 5a 5G. So the Pixel 6a may sport a 12.2-megapixel primary camera and a 16-megapixel ultra-wide lens. At the front, there may be an 8-megapixel camera for selfies.

--There’s no news about the battery and charging on this device. The current-gen Pixel 5a 5G has a 4680mAh battery, so that Google may stick to the same.

Google Pixel 6a launch

Tipster Max Jambor in a tweet said that Google Pixel 6a would launch in May. If you remember, the Google Pixel 5a was launched in August 2021, while the Pixel 4a was introduced in October 20220. Both these devices saw delayed launches due to the pandemic. However, the first midrange Pixel i.e Pixel 3a launched in the month May. So Jambor believes that the Google Pixel 6a will launch in May 2022 at Google I/O.

Rumours do hint towards Pixel 6a’s arrival in India but nothing can be ascertained at the moment. It’s worth noting that Google launched Pixel 5a only in the US and Japan. To add to that, the Pixel 6 series wasn’t in the country. So it can't be said if Google plans to bring the smartphone to the country.

Google Pixel 6a India price (expected)

It's too early to talk about the pricing of the Pixel 6a. We know that Pixel 5a 5G launched at the same price as the Pixel 4a 5G at $450 (Rs 33,000). But on the upcoming Pixel 6a Google is likely to make big changes. Thus we may see a price bump on the Pixel 6a. For reference, the Pixel 6 starts at $599 (roughly Rs 44,600), so we guess that the price of Pixel 6a will remain under $500 (roughly Rs 37,200).
