Xiaomi shares Xiaomi 12S series camera samples with Xiaomi 12S Ultra to feature new flagship Sony IMX989 sensor - Notebookcheck.net

It remains to be seen what the IMX989 is capable of; neither Sony nor Xiaomi have revealed any other details about the sensor at this stage. Xiaomi has shared several sample photos from the 'Xiaomi 12S series' though, embedded below. Potentially taken using the Xiaomi 12S Ultra, we would not be surprised if Xiaomi edited these using professional software before uploading them to Weibo. Still, the results look impressive, and it will be interesting to see what retail Xiaomi 12S Ultra units can achieve when they land next month.

Incidentally, Xiaomi has also shared a video on Weibo in which representatives from it and Leica discuss their cooperation together. Re-uploaded to YouTube by ourselves and embedded below, the video is only just over 2 minutes long. Ultimately, the video serves as promotional material for the Xiaomi 12S series, but it still provides a few insights into what is to come with the likes of the Xiaomi 12S Ultra.

Explained: What is 'Hermit' spyware and how it can affect smartphones - Times of India

banner img

Lookout, a cloud-based security company, has recently discovered a new spyware called “Hermit” that is capable of affecting both Android and iOS devices. According to a recent report by TechCrunch, the company’s security researchers have detailed that an Android version of the spyware was used in “targeted attacks by national governments with victims in Kazakhstan, Syria and Italy.” Now, Google’s researchers have also confirmed the findings of Lookout and have started notifying Android users about the devices that have already been compromised by the spyware.
What is the Hermit spyware
According to the report, Google and Lookout have confirmed that Hermit is a commercial spyware that is known to be used by governments with victims in Kazakhstan, Italy and northern Syria. Lookout has also mentioned that the spyware was first detected in Kazakhstan in April after the government violently suppressed protests against government policies. Moreover, the spyware is also speculated to be deployed in the northeastern Kurdish region of Syria and by Italian authorities as part of an anti-corruption investigation. The report also mentions that Lookout has accused and linked the spyware to RCS Lab, while the Italian software company has denied accountability.
How is the spyware distributed
As per the report, this nasty Android app is distributed by text message which looks like coming from a legitimate source. The malware can impersonate other apps that are developed by telecom companies and manufacturers like Samsung and Oppo which tricks the victim to download the malware, suggests the report.
How does it affect Android and iOS devices
The report also mentions that Lookout got hold of a sample of the Hermit Android malware which is said to be modular as it allows the spyware to download additional components that the malware requires. Like any other spyware, this one also uses different modules to collect call logs, photos, messages, emails along with recording audio, redirecting phone calls and even exposing the device’s exact location.
Moreover, Lookout has also warned that the spyware can root phones by controlling files from the command and control server required to break the device’s protections and allow unhindered access without user interaction. Paul Shunk, a Lookout researcher mentioned that the malware can run on all Android versions and “stands out from other app-based spyware.”
Meanwhile, Google has also analysed a sample of the Hermit spyware targeting iPhones. According to the tech giant, the Hermit iOS app corrupts Apple enterprise developer certificates and allows the spyware to be sideloaded on a victim’s device from outside the app store. The iOS app also packs six different exploits out of which two are zero-day vulnerabilities.
How Google and Apple are reacting to the spyware
The report mentioned that neither the Android nor the iOS versions of the Hermit spyware were found in the respective app stores. Apart from notifying the affected Android users, Google has also updated its Play Protect (the built-in app security scanner in Android) to block the app from running, says the report. Moreover, the company has also killed the spyware’s Firebase account, which was used to communicate with its servers. However, Google didn’t mention the number of affected Android users that the company has notified.
Meanwhile, Apple has also removed all known “accounts and certificates associated with the is spyware campaign”, suggests the report.

Rumour: Sonic Origins Datamine Hints At A Returning Character For Sonic Frontiers - Nintendo Life

Sonic Frontiers Sonic Looking At Camera
Image: SEGA

Happy 31st birthday to the blue blur! We've seen Sonic the Hedgehog change and evolve tons over the years, and the next step in his journey — Sonic Frontiers — is bringing some of the franchise's biggest changes yet. But before we look forward, we're looking back today with the launch of Sonic Origins.

The compilation game dropped on consoles today, including Switch, and dataminers have already dived in to see what hidden nuggets they can find. And @ahremic on Twitter has found some leftover files in Origins, but these aren't for any of the classic Sonic games, but rather for Frontiers (Thanks, Sonic Stadium and BlueStarEXSF on ResetEra).

These shaders indicate that the menus in Origins were made using tools for Frontiers, which means there are references to potential aspects of the next 3D Sonic game. Of course, these may no longer be part of the game now, so it's worth taking all of this with a pinch of salt, but there's some pretty interesting stuff to gleam here — including the return of everyone's favourite frog-chasing cat.

@ahremic and a friend popped all of their finds in a Pastebin doc right here. Many files refer to completing missions, tutorials, and clearing levels, but we've selected some of the more interesting parts:

- FirstChaosEmeraldStrageOpen
- FirstChaosEmeraldStrageGet
- ChaosEmeraldGot
- KodamaElderFirstTalked
- KodamaHermitFirstTalked
- FishCaught
- NewFishFirstLooked
- FishingBigFirstTalked
- UIKodamaTutorialWatched
- FishingSpotId
- GrowFlowerStartDay

Some of these are pretty self-explanatory still — Chaos Emerald stages are coming back, and Grow Flowers may indicate a new mode or just be code for flowers respawning. But in this little scoop of data we've fished out, we think three important new details are worth digging into.

First is all of the files referencing 'Kodama'. Kodama, in Japanese folklore, are spirits that inhabit trees (if you've seen Studio Ghibli's Princess Mononoke then you'll know). This could be a brand new character being introduced in Frontiers. And, well, from all of the footage we've seen, tree spirits wouldn't be out of place in this strange new world.

The other two should really be discussed together, and if you've ever played Sonic Adventure then you know where this is going. 'FishingBigFirstTalked' is potentially referring to Big the Cat, the fishing-loving cat who has to save his best pal Froggy through a bunch of fishing minigames. There are plenty of files here that refer to fishing, so that may well be coming to Frontiers. And if it is, then it makes sense that Big too would be there. We know you all love him really. Maybe.

We'll say this again, of course — these files were found in Sonic Origins, so they may no longer be relevant to Frontiers, but it's an indication of what has at least been considered for the next 3D entry in the Sonic series. We'll have to wait and see if this turns out to be a good catch!

Sonic Origins is out today on Switch — find out what the critics thought of the game in our round up. Sonic Frontiers is currently scheduled to be released later this year.

What do you think of the datamine? Do you want to see Big the Cat return? Let us know in the usual spot!

Poco X4 GT arrives with Dimensity 8100, Poco F4 brings an SD870 - GSMArena.com news - GSMArena.com

The Poco family is growing with two new members today. One has a passion for gaming and brings the first 144Hz display to the series, the other tries to be an all-rounder with its own “first” – the first OIS camera on a Poco phone.

Poco X4 GT

Normally, it is the F-series that is the pride and joy of the Poco line. However, the Poco X4 GT arrives with the exciting Dimensity 8100 – a mid-range chipset born in TSMC’s 5nm fabs with four Cortex-A78 cores and a new Mali-G610 MC6 GPU. This chip has posted some impressive results and usually outscores the Snapdragon 870 (and it can hold its own against the 888 as well).

The GT has a passion for gaming, which is evident in the 144Hz display – the fastest refresh rate in the family. The touch sampling rate is 270Hz. This is a 6.6” LCD with 1,080 x 2,460px resolution (20.5:9) and it can render 1 billion colors (it supports Dolby Vision as well). Peak brightness is 650 nits (500 nits typical) and the panel uses DC dimming. Also, it is guarded by Gorilla Glass 5 (the X3 GT had Victus).

Going back to the chipset, it uses LiquidCool Technology 2.0 for heat management with a vapor chamber that is 32% larger than on the X3 GT, plus there are now 7 layers of graphite.

The chipset is paired with 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM and either 128GB or 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage.

Poco has listened to your demands and has brought back the 3.5mm headphone jack. This means no Bluetooth latency to worry about and you can charge your phone while you play. Speaking of, the phone has a 5,080mAh battery that charges at 67W with the included power adapter. A full 0-100% charge takes 46 minutes. This battery is big enough to binge videos for 22 hours straight. Besides headphones, you can also use the Dolby Atmos-certified dual speakers.

The display is a tad taller than on last year’s model, which has allowed Poco to have over a millimeter of width, making the handset more comfortable in the hand. The weight increased slightly to 200g (up from 193g). The X4 GT is available in Black, Blue and Silver.

The GT model is equipped with a 64MP camera with a larger sensor than last year (1/1.72”, 0.8µm native pixels, 1.6µm with binning). It is joined by an 8MP 120° ultra wide-angle cam (1.12µm), plus a 2MP macro camera. On the front is a 20MP selfie camera (1/3.06”, 1.0µm).

A few more things to note. First is the side-mounted fingerprint reader. Second is the X-axis linear motor. Wireless connectivity includes 5G, of course, Wi-Fi 6 (ax), Bluetooth 5.3, NFC and there is even an IR blaster.

The Poco X4 GT will become available on June 27 (Monday) through select retailers, including the official Poco online store. Between June 27 and July 7 there will be an early bird discount of €80 on the regular prices of €380 for an 8/128GB unit and €430 for an 8/256GB phone. More retailers will offer the X4 GT soon.

Poco F4

The Snapdragon 870 was good enough for last year’s F3, is it good enough for the new Poco F4? That remains to be seen – the focus with the F4 was to improve the camera and battery tech. If you want cutting edge performance, the F4 GT has a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

Back to the Poco F4. It is the first in the family to feature Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). That aside, the main camera is nothing to write home about with its 1/2” sensor (0.7µm pixels, 1.4µm with binning) and f/1.8 aperture. Like on the X4 GT, it is joined by an 8MP ultra wide (119°) and 2MP macro modules on the back and a 20MP selfie camera on the front.

As for charging, the battery has essentially the same capacity as the F3, 4,500mAh. However, the charge rating has been doubled to 67W (adapter included), up from 33W. This has reduced the full 0-100% charge time from 52 minutes down to 38 minutes.

The display is the same as last year – a 6.67” AMOLED (Samsung E4) with 120Hz refresh rate and 360Hz touch sampling rate. It has 1,080 x 2,400px resolution (20:9) and a peak brightness of 1,300 nits (900 nits typical). This is an HDR10+ display that now also supports Dolby Vision. Physical protection is handled by Gorilla Glass 5. Poco claims pro-grade color tuning with the TrueColor feature, but it didn’t supply any deltaE numbers.

Like its sibling, the F4 has a side-mounted fingerprint reader and an X-axis linear motor. It has dual Dolby Atmos speakers too, but no 3.5mm jack. It does feature an IR blaster, though.
