Samsung’s Galaxy M series debuted more than three years ago. This was the company’s response to the growing popularity of budget phones from Chinese brands across the world. The M series has aimed to offer more for less in a price-sensitive segment where consumers are constantly looking for deals. The first wave of M series focused on massive batteries and bright displays. Almost ever since, Samsung has used the ‘Monster’ moniker for the M series in its sales pitch. That pitch has yielded results. According to numbers provided by Samsung from Counterpoint Research, the M Series has clocked 42 million units in sales in India since its 2019 launch. Does the Samsung Galaxy M13 5G have what it takes to add to these impressive numbers?
A new colour palette
Samsung has upped the aesthetic appeal of the M series. The new M13 5G comes in a couple of cool new shades aside from a sedate Midnight Blue. We checked out the Aqua Green, an interesting, metallic take on mint green. Our favourite colour in the lineup is the Stardust Brown, a whole new twist on Copper brown. The device looks more expensive than its asking price with a clean unibody-type design. At a time when flagship smartphones are cluttered with multiple rear lenses, it’s nice to see a simple and elegant design with two lenses on the rear.
Feature packed
Samsung has packed the M13 5G with features that matter for consumers at this price. At its heart is a MediaTek Dimensity 700 chipset that comes in two hardware variants – 4GB/64GB and 6GB/128GB (that we checked out). This won’t satisfy extreme gamers but might work for everyday users at this price point. The device notched a score of 1072 on our Geekbench (multi-core) benchmark test. Battery performance is a key purchase driver at this point, this is an area where the M13 5G scores. We comfortably sailed through a day and a half. Samsung has managed to keep the heft below 200g despite this robust battery.
Wrap up
One of our favourite features on this device is the 6.6-inch FHD+ LCD display (720 x 1600 pixels) that peaks at 480 nits of brightness. It’s one of the better displays at this price; colours are vibrant even under direct sunlight. Samsung adds a 90Hz refresh rate that makes it binge-proof. We also like the camera set-up that focuses on daily use-case scenarios rather than adding gimmicky lenses that most of us hardly ever use. There’s a 50MP primary lens that combines with a 2MP depth sensor for portraits. Images shot in optimal light are good. There’s also a 5MP selfie cam in the mix. Samsung’s Galaxy M13 5G scores on key fronts. It looks good for its price, offers a solid battery, a vibrant display and is 5G ready.
The Samsung Galaxy M13 5G costs Rs 13,999 (4GB/64GB) and Rs 15,999 (6GB/128GB) and comes in Aqua Green, Midnight Blue and Stardust Brown
