MIUI 14 global rollout announced: List of smartphones, rollout time and more - Times of India

Alongside the Xiaomi 13 series announcement, Xiaomi has also announced its MIUI 14 global rollout details at MWC 2023 event. The company has also revealed the list of 18 Xiaomi and Redmi devices that are set to receive the latest MIUI 14 update. Although the company hasn’t revealed any specific timeline for the update rollout, it's expected to start by the end of Q1 this year.
MIUI 14 update rollout
Xiaomi’s MIUI rollout schedule includes devices from across the price bracket including flagship, mid-range and budget devices from the company. Xiaomi has also confirmed that more devices will be added to the list in the future.
When these devices will receive updates is still not clear as of now as the company hasn’t revealed the exact rollout timeline except the fact that the rollout will begin by the end of the first quarter.
We expect that the company will first rollout the update for its flagship devices and follow it with other smartphones.
It is also important to note that it is possible that MIUI 14 update may not include the latest Android version to the devices as Xiaomi has a history of pushing its latest custom user interface to their devices without the latest version of Android.

Apple's Chinese contract manufacturer to develop AR device - Nikkei - HT Tech

Apple's Chinese contract manufacturer Luxshare Precision Industry Co Ltd will help develop the iPhone maker's long-awaited augmented reality (AR) device, Nikkei Asia reported on Thursday.

Luxshare has taken over the AR development team in Shanghai, previously owned by Taiwan's Pegatron that first helped Apple develop the device, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter.

Taiwan-based Foxconn is also helping with the project, Nikkei said, and Apple has tapped two of its most important suppliers, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co and Sony, to develop micro OLED displays for the device.

The iPhone maker, Luxshare Precision, Foxconn and Sony did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment, while TSMC declined to comment.

Apple's headset is set to cost around $3,000 and will be launched at this year's spring event, Bloomberg previously reported.

The company hopes to reduce the price for the second generation of the device, Nikkei said.

The device will compete with the likes of Meta Platforms' Quest Pro virtual and mixed-reality headset launched late last year at $1,500.

Bing, Bard, ChatGPT, and all the news on AI chatbots - The Verge

Big players including Microsoft, with its new Bing (or is it Sydney?), Google, with Bard, and OpenAI, with ChatGPT are making AI chatbot technology previously restricted to test labs more accessible to the general public.

How do these Large Language Model (LLM) programs work? OpenAI’s GPT-3 told us that AI uses “a series of autocomplete-like programs to learn language” and that these programs analyze “the statistical properties of the language” to “make educated guesses based on the words you’ve typed previously.”

Or, in the words of James Vincent, a human person, “These AI tools are vast autocomplete systems, trained to predict which word follows the next in any given sentence. As such, they have no hard-coded database of ‘facts’ to draw on — just the ability to write plausible-sounding statements. This means they have a tendency to present false information as truth since whether a given sentence sounds plausible does not guarantee its factuality.”

But there are so many more pieces to the AI landscape that are coming into play — and there are going to be problems — but you can be sure to see it all unfold here on The Verge.

  • External Link
Can you think like an AI?

The game is to guess the secret word. The hitch is that the AI is classifying what words are alike. Yesterday’s word was “grasshopper,” and the AI thought “ant” was closer than “cricket.” Maybe that’s true if you’re analyzing texts to predict the next word — after all, there’s a fable about an ant and a grasshopper — but “cricket” and “grasshopper” are synonyms!

Chinese tech giants have reportedly been told not to offer public access to the US-developed ChatGPT. These companies have already had to censor the output of AI tools like image generators.

  • If you need to use AI to respond to a tragedy, maybe it’s better to say nothing at all.

The Vanderbilt Hustler reports the school’s Peabody Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion is apologizing after sending a message regarding the shooting at Michigan State University that was “paraphrased” from OpenAI’s ChatGPT model (via Gizmodo).

The generic-sounding email lacks any kind of personal touch, and responses to it reflect that, as noted by this quote from Vanderbilt student Laith Kayat:

Deans, provosts, and the chancellor: Do more. Do anything. And lead us into a better future with genuine, human empathy, not a robot

In the wake of the Michigan shootings, let us come together as a community to reaffirm our commitment to caring for one another and promoting a culture of inclusivity on our campus. By doing so, we can honor the victims of this tragedy and work towards a safer, more compassionate future for all. (Paraphrase from OpenAI’s ChatGPT AI language model, personal communication, February 15, 2023).

  • AI-spam has driven one of the best science fiction and fantasy magazines to close submissions.

Clarkesworld has always been a great place to submit your short fiction because they respond fast and pay well. There’s not a lot of waiting to learn if you’ve been accepted or not. Unfortunately, the Hugo-winning magazine has been forced to temporarily stop accepting submissions because it was getting hit with too many AI-generated submissions. Submissions will reopen eventually, but editor Neil Clarke says the current tools for spotting AI-generated submissions aren’t “reliable enough.”

“They don’t actually tell us this is Bard, but this has Bard’s fingerprints all over it.”

AI is based on low-paid labor. This interview with one of the people who help decide what Google will show you is worth a read — for starters, he says he makes $3 less per hour than his daughter, who works in fast food.

Bing AI often refers to itself as Sydney, but Microsoft says that was an internal codename for a chat experience it was previously working on.

  • Do my AI’s deceive me, or have my AIs been deceived?

Scientists at the University of Chicago have created Glaze, a tool that could help artists prevent their artwork from being replicated by AI art generators by invisibly mimicking a different art style.

Glaze isn’t available just yet and the team acknowledges it isn’t a perfect solution, but it could help bridge the gap while copyright protections catch up with generative AI technology.

Before and after comparisons of Karla Ortiz’s artwork when using Glaze. The images masked with Glazed appear in a different art style after being fed into an AI art generator.

How to find Jobberknolls and obtain Jobberknoll Feathers in Hogwarts Legacy - Sportskeeda

Hogwarts Legacy is a magical adventure across a world set in the Harry Potter series of novels and media. It features fantastic otherworldly creatures that players can capture and add to their collection in the Vivarium in the Room of Requirement.

One such exotic species of magical beasts include the Jobberknolls, which will be the focus of this particular article.

Note: Spoilers for certain story elements of Hogwarts Legacy will follow. Viewer discretion is advised.

Finding Jobberknoll dens in Hogwarts Legacy

The Jobberknoll den locations in the in-game map (Image via YouTube/Gaming Tornedo)

There are six Jobberknoll dens in the in-game world of Hogwarts Legacy, as seen by animal paw marks on the world map. Unfortunately, the animal paw marker can refer to any animal, making the process rather cumbersome.

For ease of reference, players can look at these locations, which contain an abundance of these beasts:

  • The first location is southwest of the San Bakar Tower Floo station. Players can head here to find a Jobberknoll den.
  • For the next location, head south from the Marunweem and exit the town to find the den.
  • Another Jobberknoll den is found in Bainburgh, near Manor Cape. Make your way eastward to find the den.
  • The fourth den is located west of Irondale and is relatively easy to come across.
  • Yet another den can be found within Manor Cape as well. Make your way to the road from the Floo Station and head south to find it.
  • The sixth and final Jobberknoll Den is found near Hogwarts Valley.

How can players acquire Jobberknoll Feathers?

To acquire these Feathers, players must first rescue and capture the beasts, which can be accomplished in the following steps:

  • As a prerequisite, you must have completed the main story quest, “The Elf, the Nab-sack, and the Loom,” before capturing the beasts.
  • Make your way to the locations that spawn the Jobberknolls.
  • Sneak across to the beast, making sure not to alert it. The Disillusionment charm is heavily recommended.
  • Bring out the Nab-sack and follow the two button prompts to capture it.
  • You can always use the Arresto Momentum or Levioso spells to buy yourself some time.
  • A light grey, white dotted special Shiny Jobberknoll can also be found.
  • Next, head to the Vivarium in the Room of Requirement.
  • After releasing the Jobberknolls, make sure to brush and feed them.
  • Doing so will reward the player with five Jobberknoll Feathers they can collect and use.

Make sure to clear your inventory before collecting Jobberknolls. Players can also choose to release them into the wild if they so wish or sell them for 120 Galleons each at the Brood and Peck in Hogsmeade.

What is Hogwarts Legacy?

Hogwarts Legacy is the latest wizarding adventure from developers Avalanche Software and publisher WB Games, based on the Wizarding World franchise. Players take control of a fifth-year student in the 1800s, fresh into Hogwarts, as they face unseen dangers and a conspiracy that threatens to throw the entire wizarding world into chaos.

The game was released on February 10, 2023, for the PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5 to very positive reviews. A Nintendo Switch port is in development and is scheduled for release later this year.

Factory-sealed first-generation iPhone sells for over $63,000 at auction - GSMArena.com news - GSMArena.com

iPhones tend to hold their value better than most other phones but this latest example is one for the history books. A factory sealed first-generation Apple iPhone from 2007 sold for $63,356 at an auction over the weekend.

The device in question is an 8GB Apple iPhone and had an MSRP of $599 back in June of 2007. The auction ran from February 2 with a starting bid of $2,500 which ballooned past the $60,000 mark over the weekend.

The phone has an interesting story too – it’s owner Karen Green received it as a gift from her friends over fifteen years ago. The owner was a Verizon customer at the time while the phone only ran on AT&T’s network so it was quickly stored in a shelf and forgotten for over a decade.

The phone was then appraised in 2019 with an estimated value of $5,000 and ultimately went on auction earlier this month. Based on reports, Karen Green will use the funds from the auction towards opening a business venture.

Microsoft Outlook spam filters break down, flood users' inbox with junk emails - Daijiworld.com

San Francisco, Feb 20 (IANS): Several Outlook users on Monday took to social media after facing issues with their spam email filters that were broken and junk mails reached users' inbox.

Many Outlook users in Europe faced the same issues, seeing an inbox full of spam messages.

"Outlook spam filter is garbage," an Outlook user tweeted.

"Glad I'm not the only one that has been having problems! I hope Microsoft is on the case. Very annoying!" another posted.

It was advisable for users to temporarily disable notifications for email app on smartphones that's connected to their Outlook personal account to avoid getting notifications for spam emails.

Microsoft Outlook was yet to fix the issue.

"Is it just me or have Outlook (online) spam filters gone from reasonably ok to utterly bad?," tweeted another affected user.

Earlier this month, Microsoft's Outlook webmail service suffered an outage.

Users reported issues while sending, receiving, or searching email through Outlook.com.

Some users also found they were not able to connect to Outlook.com, seeing 500 Errors when trying to log in.

The company applied "targeted mitigation to the infrastructure, and early validation indicated recovery. The issue was fixed later.
