Planning to buy Xiaomi smartphone or TV? Why you may have to pay more - Gadgets Now

Planning to buy Xiaomi smartphone or TV Why you may have to pay more
Xiaomi said it will increase prices of its smartphones and smart TVs by about 3-6 per cent from July 1 in India as the Chinese tech major faces pressures like shortage of components and higher shipping charges. A Xiaomi India spokesperson said since the last year, there have been shortages across the supply chain.

"Due to massive demand-supply mismatch, the majority of components used in smartphones, Smart TV and other electronics gadgets (chipsets, display panels, display driver, back panels, battery etc) have seen constant upward movement in their prices," the spokesperson added.

This, coupled with an unprecedented increase in shipping charges has had an effect on almost all the technology players, including Xiaomi.

"While we have tried to absorb the increasing costs, some of our products have witnessed a price hike. We also foresee an inevitable increase of 3-6 per cent in prices of our smart TVs from July 1 onwards," the spokesperson noted.

Prices of smartphones are expected to go up by a similar percentage.

Other players in the LED televisions space are also estimated to have hiked prices by 3-4 per cent this month as the cost of panels have gone up in the global market, besides an increase in logistics expenses. In April too, prices had been hiked due to a rise in operating cost on account of increased ocean freight charges, and domestic transportation costs.

TV is one of the largest segments under the entire domain of appliance and consumer electronics. It accounts for a volume of almost 17 million with an estimated sale value of almost Rs 25,000 crore.

According to a joint report by the industry body, CEAMA and Frost & Sullivan, the TV market is expected to grow to 284 lakh units in 2024-25 from 175 lakh units in 2018-19.

Open-cell panel and the chips of the TV are predominantly imported from China besides some other markets such as Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam and only the last mile assembly is done in India, as per the report.

In February this year, Xiaomi had announced its partnership with contract manufacturers BYD, DBG, and Radiant to strengthen its 'Make in India' efforts. The company had tied up with BYD and DBG for smartphones, while the partnership with Radiant was aimed at augmenting Xiaomi's capacity of smart TVs in India.

At that time, Xiaomi had five campuses in India, where its partners Foxconn and Flex assemble phones in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. It also works with Dixon for making its TVs in India.

Xiaomi India Managing Director Manu Jain had said the company has sold 3 million 'Made in India' TVs, and that demand for TVs is going up significantly.

He had added that the company is committed to investing in India for the long-term and manufacture not only smartphones and TVs, but also components.

Google sunsets the APK format for new Android apps - Android Authority

share it android google play store

Andy Walker / Android Authority

TL;DR

  • Starting in August 2021, Google will require all new Android APKs to land on the Play Store as App Bundles instead.
  • This will invariably result in smaller file sizes and other boons for the end-user.
  • However, it will also require app developers to push out APK versions of their apps to other non-Play Store channels, as they won’t support App Bundles.

For as long as Android has been around, Android apps have been launched in the APK format (which stands for Android Package). However, in 2018, Google introduced a new format called Android App Bundles, or AAB (with the filename *.aab). Google touted that this new format would result in smaller app file sizes and easier ways to control various aspects of apps. Of the millions of apps on the Google Play Store, thousands of them already use the AAB system.

Today, Google announced that the AAB format will now officially replace Android APKs. This means that starting in August of this year, all new apps submitted to the Google Play Store must come in the AAB format. Apps that are currently APKs can stay that way — at least for now.

No more Android APKs: Good news or bad news?

In the end, this is good news for the average consumer. Android App Bundles can be up to 15% smaller than Android APKs, for example. Developers will also have more control over how they distribute updates to apps, which will likely result in faster and more efficient app updates.

However, there are two significant issues with AABs. The first is that developers who want their apps to appear in other distribution channels — such as the Amazon App Store or Huawei’s App Gallery — will need to manually export APK versions of their apps. This won’t require much effort on the dev’s part, but it would mean that any developer who wanted their app to only appear on the Play Store would have that power. In those cases, end users would need to export AABs as Android APKs on their own, as *.aab files would not work on alternative stores.

Related: An introduction to the Google Play Console for Android Developers

The other issue is that developers will need to give Google their app signing key to export an AAB app as an APK. This gives Google quite a bit of power. The app signing key is basically proof that a specific developer created a specific app. While it’s unlikely Google would ever do so, it is possible that it could sign apps on behalf of a developer. It’s also possible that someone could gain access to this key and then sign apps for themselves. As such, some developers aren’t too keen on the App Bundle format.

The bottom line, though, is that all new Android apps on the Google Play Store will need to be AABs. There’s no way around it. This is a bold new direction away from Android APKs, but we’ll need to wait for the dust to settle before we draw any conclusions.

Samsung Galaxy F22 to Launch in India on July 6, Flipkart Listing Reveals Key Specs - News18

Samsung will launch a new smartphone under its F-series dubbed Samsung Galaxy F22 in India on July 6. The phone will retail via Flipkart, a dedicated micro-site reveals. The website also carries promotional posters, where we can notice its key specifications that include a 90Hz display and quad rear camera setup with a 48-megapixel primary shooter. In terms of design, the Galaxy F22 looks similar to the newly launched Galaxy A22 with the square-shaped rear camera module and waterdrop-style notch on the front panel for the single selfie camera. The poster also highlights at least two colour options - Black and Blue, but there could be more at the official launch.

The Flipkart listing further reveals the presence of a 6,000mAh battery on the Galaxy F22, unlike the 5,000mAh battery on Samsung Galaxy A22. It appears the upcoming smartphone houses a side-mounted fingerprint scanner instead of a rear-mounted scanner for biometric security. Samsung is also focusing on the 6.4-inch Super AMOLED display that has HD+ resolution for “Full On cinematic experience." Notably, the Samsung Galaxy A22 sports the same display size, panel, and resolution. Previously, Galaxy F22 appeared on Google Play Console listing where specifications such as 4GB RAM and MediaTek Helio G80 processor were spotted. It is rumoured to cost under Rs 15,000 in India. Samsung’s F-series phones are generally popular for offering large batteries and displays. Currently, the company sells multiple devices under the series. For instance, the entry-level Samsung Galaxy F02s costs Rs 8,999 for the base 32GB storage, and the Galaxy F12 price in India starts at Rs 10,999 for the base 64GB model. Both phones offer a large 6.5-inch screen and up to 6,000mAh battery. The company also offers relatively more premium Samsung Galaxy F41 and Galaxy F62 in the country for Rs 14,499 and Rs 23,999, respectively.
