AI 'godfather' Geoffrey Hinton quits Google to spread awareness against 'dangers' of artificial intelligen - Economic Times

Geoffrey Hinton, the man who won the 'Nobel Prize of computing' for his work on neural networks and is known as the godfather of AI, is now speaking against the dangers of artificial intelligence.

Hinton, alongside two other so-called godfathers of AI, bagged the Turing Award in 2018 for their trailblazing work in artificial intelligence, recently quit his job at Google.

The reason why Hinton handed over his resignation and walked out of Google is so he can finally speak on the dangers of artificial intelligence, a tech that powers popular chatbots such as ChatGPT, Bing and more.
In 2012, the 75-year-old along with two of his graduate students at the University of Toronto created tech that eventually became the foundation for the artificial intelligence that the biggest companies in the tech industry believe is the next step towards the future.

However, it was pretty shocking when Hinton joined the growing chorus of critics who have been raising their voices to warn masses of the danger of generative AI.

After working for over a decade at Google and stepping up the ranks to become a respected voice in the tech world, Hinton quit his job so he can "freely" speak out and warn people about the risks of AI. In an interview with New York Times, Hinton says that a part of him now regrets his life’s work.“I console myself with the normal excuse: If I hadn’t done it, somebody else would have,” Hinton told NYT.

On Thursday, Hinton spoke to Google CEO Sundar Pichai after handing over his resignation last month.

Tech industry leaders believe that artificial intelligence could have an equal impact as the web browser had in the early 1990s, and could be a breakthrough in different fields such as drug research and education.

However, many critics of AI, including Elon Musk, feel that generative AI can be a tool for misinformation and could become a huge risk to jobs, or worse, a risk to humanity.

“It is hard to see how you can prevent the bad actors from using it for bad things,” Hinton said.

When a group of leaders, including Eric Horvitz, the chief scientific officer at Microsoft which uses OpenAI's tech across a variety of its products, released their own letter warning of the rising risks of AI, Hinton did not sign it.

The computer scientist said that the reason he did not sign those letters was because he did not want to publicly criticise Google or other companies until he had left his job.

Hinton joined Google after the company spent $44 million to acquire a company started by him and his two students in Toronto - Ilya Sutskever and Alex Krishevsky - that could analyse thousands of photos and teach itself to recognise common objects such as cats, dogs and flowers.

Their system led to other technologies that are becoming increasingly powerful such as ChatGPT and Google's Bard.

As companies across the world continue to improve their AI systems, Hinton believes they are becoming "increasingly dangerous".

"Look at how it was five years ago and how it is now,” he said of AI technology. “Take the difference and propagate it forwards. That’s scary.”

As per NYT, all was good between Hinton and Google until Microsoft launched the new OpenAI-based Bing, which sparked a "code red" at Google.

Spreading of misinformation is one of Hinton's many concerns regarding AI, including replacing workers. Hinton fears that as the world gets filled with fake imagery and text that nobody will be able to tell "what is true anymore". The former Google employee further emphasised on the dangers of the technology which could quickly displace workers, and become a greater danger as it learns new behaviours.

“The idea that this stuff could actually get smarter than people — a few people believed that,” he said, adding “But most people thought it was way off. And I thought it was way off. I thought it was 30 to 50 years or even longer away. Obviously, I no longer think that."

In his tweet, Hinton said Google itself had "acted very responsibly" and denied that he had quit so that he could criticise his former employer.

When Reuters reached out to Google, part of Alphabet Inc., the company did not immediately reply to a request for comment. However, the Times quoted Google’s chief scientist, Jeff Dean, as saying in a statement: “We remain committed to a responsible approach to A.I. We’re continually learning to understand emerging risks while also innovating boldly.”

Scientists use brain scans and AI to 'decode' thoughts - HT Tech

Scientists said Monday they have found a way to use brain scans and artificial intelligence modelling to transcribe "the gist" of what people are thinking, in what was described as a step towards mind reading.

While the main goal of the language decoder is to help people who have the lost the ability to communicate, the US scientists acknowledged that the technology raised questions about "mental privacy".

Aiming to assuage such fears, they ran tests showing that their decoder could not be used on anyone who had not allowed it to be trained on their brain activity over long hours inside a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanner.

Previous research has shown that a brain implant can enable people who can no longer speak or type to spell out words or even sentences.

These "brain-computer interfaces" focus on the part of the brain that controls the mouth when it tries to form words.

Alexander Huth, a neuroscientist at the University of Texas at Austin and co-author of a new study, said that his team's language decoder "works at a very different level".

"Our system really works at the level of ideas, of semantics, of meaning," Huth told an online press conference.

It is the first system to be able to reconstruct continuous language without an invasive brain implant, according to the study in the journal Nature Neuroscience.

- 'Deeper than language' -

For the study, three people spent a total of 16 hours inside an fMRI machine listening to spoken narrative stories, mostly podcasts such as the New York Times' Modern Love.

This allowed the researchers to map out how words, phrases and meanings prompted responses in the regions of the brain known to process language.

They fed this data into a neural network language model that uses GPT-1, the predecessor of the AI technology later deployed in the hugely popular ChatGPT.

The model was trained to predict how each person's brain would respond to perceived speech, then narrow down the options until it found the closest response.

To test the model's accuracy, each participant then listened to a new story in the fMRI machine.

The study's first author Jerry Tang said the decoder could "recover the gist of what the user was hearing".

For example, when the participant heard the phrase "I don't have my driver's license yet", the model came back with "she has not even started to learn to drive yet".

The decoder struggled with personal pronouns such as "I" or "she," the researchers admitted.

But even when the participants thought up their own stories -- or viewed silent movies -- the decoder was still able to grasp the "gist," they said.

This showed that "we are decoding something that is deeper than language, then converting it into language," Huth said.

Because fMRI scanning is too slow to capture individual words, it collects a "mishmash, an agglomeration of information over a few seconds," Huth said.

"So we can see how the idea evolves, even though the exact words get lost."

- Ethical warning -

David Rodriguez-Arias Vailhen, a bioethics professor at Spain's Granada University not involved in the research, said it went beyond what had been achieved by previous brain-computer interfaces.

This brings us closer to a future in which machines are "able to read minds and transcribe thought," he said, warning this could possibly take place against people's will, such as when they are sleeping.

The researchers anticipated such concerns.

They ran tests showing that the decoder did not work on a person if it had not already been trained on their own particular brain activity.

The three participants were also able to easily foil the decoder.

While listening to one of the podcasts, the users were told to count by sevens, name and imagine animals or tell a different story in their mind. All these tactics "sabotaged" the decoder, the researchers said.

Next, the team hopes to speed up the process so that they can decode the brain scans in real time.

They also called for regulations to protect mental privacy.

"Our mind has so far been the guardian of our privacy," said bioethicist Rodriguez-Arias Vailhen.

"This discovery could be a first step towards compromising that freedom in the future."

Apple rolls out Rapid Security Response update to iPhones, iPads, Macs - Deccan Herald

Apple regularly rolls out incremental updates to its devices to bring new features, resolve issues caused by software bugs and also fix loopholes in the system to curb cyber threats.

Now, for the first time, Apple has deployed an emergency firmware iOS/iPadOS 16.4.1(a) dubbed-- Rapid Security Response Update-- to iPhones and iPads.

It is said to fix critical security issues more quickly, such as issues that might have been exploited or reported to exist 'in the wild.' As most security loopholes are not known to all cyber criminals and to give a chance for Apple device owners to update to the latest firmware, the company has not disclosed the specific information of the issue. All Apple device owners are advised to update to the latest version as soon as possible.

It should be noted that a similar macOS 13.3.1 update is also released to Macs, MacBooks, and iMacs.

Apple's First Rapid Security Response update to iPhone 14 Pro Max (screen-grab)

It is a welcome move by Apple. It greatly reduces the time taken to release security software updates rather than wait for other less-priority issues to be resolved.

Compared to the last decade, there are more people online than ever before and it will only increase, thanks to affordable smartphones, tablets, and computers. Now, most people perform tasks, work and even study on smart devices more easily than physically attending at designated places. So, cybercriminals and even private and state-run spy agencies are investing their sources in cracking platforms such as Windows, Android, iOS, ChromeOS, and macOS, to try to infiltrate into potential victims' devices to steal their hard-earned money and in some cases track targeted people such as journalists, human rights activists and politicians.

With Rapid Security Response Update, Apple will be able to roll out security patches as and when the security loophole is identified and the fix is ready for deployment.

Procedure on how to enable Auto updating of Rapid Response Security Update (screen-grab)

Here's how to enable the automatic installation of Rapid Security Response Update on your Apple device:

On iPhone/iPad
Go to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates, then make sure that "Security Responses & System Files" is turned on.

On Mac device
Tap on the Apple menu (with Apple logo) >> System Settings. Click General in the sidebar, then click Software Update on the right. Click the Show Details button next to Automatic Updates, then make sure that "Install Security Responses and system files" is turned on.
