WhatsApp to soon offer email address verification option, currently available for select users - India Today

WhatsApp has been adding a lot of features to its platform and the messaging platform is now all set to add one more feature, which is likely to improve users' experience. WhatsApp already offers a security feature to people and it is now testing a new way to let users verify their account. Here are the details.

WhatsApp will soon allow you to verify your account through email. The feature, which has been spotted in the beta version of the app, will give an additional option to sign in to WhatsApp. As of now, WhatsApp allows people to verify their account using only their phone number. People who have signed up for the beta program of WhatsApp will be able to test the feature through the latest update.

Those who are using the beta version of WhatsApp can check for the new feature by going to the app's Settings > Account > Email Address. Make sure that you are using WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.24.10 version, 2.23.24.8, and 2.23.24.9, otherwise you might not find the new feature in the app, according to WABetaInfo.

Besides, WhatsApp recently added the ability to use two mobile numbers on one account. This is a big update considering people previously had to use a dual or clone app feature on phones to be able to use two different accounts on one device.

WhatsApp has done a great job by considering rolling out this feature to make many people's jobs easier to connect with users using different numbers. Setting up a second WhatsApp account on the same app is a straightforward process. You'll require a second phone number and SIM card, or a device that supports multi-SIM or eSIM technology. You will have full control over privacy and notification settings for each of your accounts, according to details mentioned on the official blog of the messaging platform.

The company reported that the feature will be rolled out in a few weeks. But, many people still haven't received it. The feature should arrive sometime in November. Currently, the beta testers of WhatsApp can start using this feature. The feature will first arrive for the Android version of WhatsApp. It is currently unknown when the company plans to release the same for the iOS version.

Sony claims to fix the rolling shutter problem with its latest A9 III mirrorless camera - The Verge

The Sony A9 III features the company’s first global shutter in a full-frame mirrorless camera.

Sony has announced the latest in its line of popular professional mirrorless cameras: the A9 III. It’s a $5,999 full-frame camera with a stacked 24.6-megapixel sensor that succeeds the A9 II released four years ago. But the most important thing about the A9 III is its new shutter.

The A9 III is the first full-frame camera to use a global shutter. This allows it to expose every pixel at the same time so there is no distortion in both stills and video. Within most mirrorless cameras, such as the Canon R5, Panasonic GH5, and Nikon Z9, there is a rolling shutter. Rolling shutters capture an image by exposing row by row of pixels, which can lead to distortion. Below is a graphic from Lensrentals.com that shows this difference well.

Rolling shutters capture an image by exposing row by row of pixels, which can lead to distortion.

Thanks to this new global shutter, the A9 III is capable of 4K 120fps video with no crop, 120fps 14-bit RAW shooting for 192 frames with real-time AF, flash sync at any shutter speed, and a max shutter speed of 1/80,000 (1/16,000 during continuous shooting). There is also a one-second pre-capture that can preemptively capture 120 frames before the shutter is pressed and a custom button function that can temporarily boost shutter speed during a continuous shutter press. This allows photographers to ramp shutter speeds without lifting their finger off of the shutter button. These are very impressive and fast specs.

The problem with a global shutter, though, is it typically doesn’t perform as well in low light, and it typically doesn’t provide as much dynamic range. Sony made no claims about low-light performance during the keynote today, but the A9 III’s spec sheet boasts it can capture images at up to 51,200 ISO. The A9 lineup has long prioritized speed over higher resolution or extreme low-light performance, and the A9 III appears to be designed to carry on that torch.

Up until this point, the A9 II had become Sony’s forgotten flagship. In 2019, when it launched, it had the latest and greatest tech, including blackout-free continuous 20fps shooting and a 24.2-megapixel sensor. It was an ideal camera for professional sports photography, but then, Sony launched the A1 in January 2021. The A1 was faster, had more megapixels, better focusing speeds, and a new, faster processing engine, leaving the A9 II in the dust.

I had all but forgotten about the A9 until today, but its history of being tuned for photographers who need the absolute fastest speeds is alive again. We will have to put all of these speedy specs to the test when we get our hands on a review unit in the coming months, so stay tuned for that. The Sony A9 III will be available next spring for $5,999.

Apple has no plans to make a 27-inch iMac with Apple Silicon - The Verge

The 2020 27-inch iMac
The 2020 version of the 27-inch iMac is the last of its kind.
Photo by Dieter Bohn / The Verge

Apple will not be making an Apple Silicon version of the 27-inch iMac to replace the Intel-equipped model that it discontinued in 2022. The company is instead focusing the iMac line around the 24-inch model that was first released in early 2021 and just updated with the new M3 processor this fall.

Apple PR representative Starlayne Meza confirmed the company’s plans to The Verge. The company encourages those who have been holding out hope for a larger iMac to consider the Studio Display and Mac Studio or Mac Mini, which pair a 27-inch 5K screen with a separate computer, compared to the all-in-one design of the iMac.

For many years, the 27-inch iMac was Apple’s flagship consumer desktop computer, and its reach spread far beyond the typical living room or home office into the studios and edit bays of many media companies. But since Apple never released a version with its in-house Apple Silicon processors, many video editors, developers, and other creatives have moved on to other machines, such as the Mac Studio and MacBook Pro, or more modular desktop PCs.

The new 24-inch iMac is a gorgeous all-in-one computer, but it’s no longer designed for power users like the older 27-inch model was.
Photo by Dan Seifert / The Verge

Apple says the 24-inch iMac, which has a 4.5K display, neatly splits the difference between the old Intel models, which came in 21-inch 4K versions and the 27-inch 5K model. But the 24-inch iMac does not come with Apple’s most capable processors, instead sticking with its base model chips. Even today’s base Apple Silicon processors are faster than the older Intel models, but in years past, you could equip an Intel iMac with very high-end chips and discrete GPUs that made it a powerful machine at the time. Those who want more performance than the base M3 chip now, particularly for GPU-focused workloads, have no choice but to look at the other Macs or outside of Apple’s lineup.

The larger iMac also had more power user features, like a wide array of ports and an SD card slot. The current 24-inch iMac comes with a maximum of four USB-C ports, and that’s it.

I’ve been testing the new iMac for a few days and will be publishing my review later this week. It’s an excellent all-in-one desktop computer for most consumers, but as someone who uses a 27-inch monitor all day for work, I immediately feel more claustrophobic on the 24-inch screen and wish there were an option for a bigger model. But it’s clear that Apple does not intend for the iMac to be anything more than a family computer or to look pretty at the reception desk of trendy retail stores or spas. The move away from power users also puts some clarity around the reality of the all-in-one desktop PC market, which has been relegated to a niche status compared to the dominance of laptops or more personal devices like phones and tablets.

The company’s message today is specifically concerning a 27-inch iMac, which does leave the door open for an even bigger iMac to come in the future, as has been rumored on and off for some time. I personally would not hold out much hope for that, however.

Apple to refresh the entire iPad lineup in 2024: Mark Gurman - CNBCTV18

This was the first year that Apple did not release an update to any of the iPads in its lineup since the first iPad came out in 2010. Instead, we got a cheaper USB Type-C Apple Pencil and the M3 Macs in October.

However, this — and more — has given Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reason to believe that the tech giant could upgrade the entire iPad lineup next year. This means that users can expect new models of iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPad mini, and the entry-level iPad in 2024.

“Apple could have tried to rush out more new products, but revamped iPads and AirPods aren’t yet ready. The company plans to update its entire iPad lineup during 2024. New low-end AirPods are coming next year as well, with a refreshed Pro model following in 2025,” Gurman noted in the latest edition of his weekly newsletter, Power On.

While the iPad Pro, iPad Air and the base iPad received upgrades last year, the iPad Mini has not received an refresh since September 2021.

Gurman earlier stated that new 11- and 13-inch iPad Pro models with the M3 chip and OLED displays should be available in the first half of 2024, while the entry-level to mid-range iPads would receive an update as early as March 2024. It is anticipated that the upcoming iPad Air and iPad Mini would come with M2 and A16 Bionic chips, respectively.

As far as the upcoming Macs are concerned, Gurman that the M3 13- and 15-inch MacBook Air models, together with the Mac Mini, will be available in 2024 and that the new Mac Studio is already under development.

watchOS Update Coming Soon With Fix for Apple Watch Battery Drain - MacRumors

Apple is preparing a fix for an issue causing some Apple Watches to experience excessive battery drain after being updated to watchOS 10.1, the company said today in an internal memo shared with Apple Authorized Service Providers.

watchOS
In the memo, which MacRumors obtained from multiple sources, Apple said the issue will be fixed in a watchOS update that is "coming soon." Apple did not provide any additional details in the memo, so it is unclear what the underlying cause of the issue is, how many customers are affected, and if every Apple Watch model is impacted.

There have been complaints about this issue from customers across the MacRumors Forums, Apple Support Community, Reddit, and X since watchOS 10.1 was released in late October. The issue seems to affect a variety of Apple Watches, ranging from older models like the Apple Watch Series 5 to the latest Apple Watch Ultra 2.

"WatchOS 10.1 is killing the battery on my Apple Watch," wrote customer Martin Cooper on X. "100% to 50% in less than 60 mins."

Apple's developer release notes for iOS 17.1 said that update fixed an issue where "increased power consumption might occur" when an Apple Watch running watchOS 10.1 is paired with an iPhone running iOS 17, but evidently the Apple Watch battery drain issue has not been completely fixed, so a watchOS update will be necessary.

MacRumors recently reported that Apple is preparing to release iOS 17.1.1 for the iPhone, and it is likely that the Apple Watch battery drain issue will be fixed in a watchOS 10.1.1 update. However, it is possible that the fix might not arrive until watchOS 10.2, which is currently in beta testing and is expected to be released in December.
