A few potential fixes to WhatsApp chat backup getting stuck on your Galaxy phone - SamMobile

Many WhatsApp users are reporting an issue related to the backup function getting stuck at 100%. The problem seemingly affects Android users, Galaxy smartphone owners, and iOS customers in equal measure. It crosses all mobile platforms, and as of this writing, there doesn’t seem to be a definitive solution in sight. Nevertheless, WhatsApp users can try to work around the problem with a bit of tweaking.

The WhatsApp chat backup problem

WhatsApp has a backup option that syncs data with Google Drive. Users have to opt-in before using it, and once they do, they can allow WhatsApp to perform regular backups of chat messages and media files to Google Drive.

A notification — complete with a progress bar — is sent to the user when a backup starts. So far, so good. But the problem that many WhatsApp users face is a progress bar that gets stuck at 100%.
From our own experience using WhatsApp on various Galaxy smartphones, the backup process finishes eventually, though it’s painfully slow and can take hours.

Various solutions have been attempted to fix this issue permanently, but none seem to have worked. There are, however, several possible temporary solutions that could help you get past the stuck backup process faster.

The problem is very likely to reoccur later on, and some fixes might not always work. But if you’re one of the many WhatsApp users getting nagged by this issue, then there’s not much else you can do except for waiting or trying to work around the issue. So, here are a few fixes that Galaxy smartphone owners and affected WhatsApp users can try.

Ways to try getting WhatsApp chat backup unstuck

First things first, let’s get the more obvious possible solution out of the way by making sure that you’re using the latest version of WhatsApp from the Google Play Store. It’s up to you if you want to update your existing app or uninstall it first, but if you’re looking for a clean install, you’re more likely to get results from clearing the app’s cache.

Clear WhatsApp cache

Tap and hold the WhatsApp shortcut and tap the small “i” (info) button. Alternatively, you can open the Settings app on the phone, go to Apps, scroll all the way down to and tap WhatsApp.

Then, go to Storage and tap the Clear Cache button in the lower-right corner of the screen.

Make sure you have the right Google account linked with WhatsApp

WhatsApp uses Google Drive to sync data, which means that a Google account is required to perform automated backups. And while this is unlikely to be the root of your problem, there’s a theory that if the Google account linked to WhatsApp is inactive, the backup-to-Google Drive function could run into issues.

To check if you have the right Google account linked with WhatsApp, open the app and tap the three-dot button located in the upper-right corner. Go to Settings and access the Chats category. From there, tap Chat backup and make sure you have the right Google account.

It could be as easy as closing WhatsApp from recent apps

If the backup process runs in the background for long enough, it could be that the system puts WhatsApp to sleep as the backup process continues. It might look like the process is stuck at 100%, but it might’ve been completed already while the app was asleep. What you’re seeing could be a leftover notification.

If you want to test this, simply close WhatsApp from recent apps when you think that the chat backup process is stuck, and then reopen the app. Notice if the backup process completes or hangs again.

Back up WhatsApp chat over Wi-Fi only

4G is fast enough for backing up WhatsApp chats, not to mention the fact that 5G is becoming more widespread, but if your app decides to perform a backup when you’re not connected to a Wi-Fi network, then poor cellular coverage might lead to the WhatsApp backup progress bar slowing down or even getting stuck.

You can set WhatsApp to back up chat data only when the phone is connected to a Wi-Fi network. To do this, open the Settings menu in WhatsApp, access the Chats category and Chat backup section, and tap Back up over. Select Wi-Fi only from the drop-down menu.

Lower the amount of data WhatsApp has to back up by excluding video

WhatsApp lets users back up not only text chat to Google Drive but video messages as well. Evidently, videos take a lot more data than text, and this could make the progress bar look like it’s stuck, or it might even cause the backup process to freeze.

You can try lowering the amount of WhatsApp chat data being backed up to Google Drive by excluding video data. To do this, go to WhatsApp settings and access Chats, tap Chat backup, and turn off Include videos.

Delete existing WhatsApp chat backups from Google Drive

And lastly, you can try deleting your WhatsApp chat backup files from Google Drive and start fresh with a new backup, assuming you’ve taken the proper precautions in case you need to preserve your data.

To delete WhatsApp chat backups in Google Drive, open your Google Drive account in your browser, click the cog icon in the top-right corner to access Settings, then click Manage Apps and look for WhatsApp Messenger. Click the Options drop-down menu and clear the app data.

Xiaomi Takes Second Spot in Global Smartphone Shipments in Q2, Ousting Apple: IDC - Gadgets 360

Samsung continued to reign supreme in worldwide smartphone shipments for Q2 2021, but Xiaomi gained the most, according to the last report by International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. Xiaomi moved into the second position for the first time, nudging Apple to third place in Q2 2021. Huawei's decline in shipments and LG's exit from the smartphone business, caused a slight shift in market positions this quarter. Overall shipment volumes grew 13.2 percent year over year, slightly beating IDC's forecast of 12.5 percent growth. Smartphone vendors shipped a total of 313.2 million devices during the quarter.

IDC reports that Samsung shipped 59 million units in Q2 2021 gaining a market share of 18.8 percent becoming the top vendor. The South Korean giant shipped 54 million units last year in the same quarter. Xiaomi, on the other hand, saw a significant YoY increase in shipments with 53.1 million units shipped in Q2 2021 raking in 16.9 percent of the market share. This is a huge increase from 28.5 million units shipped in the same quarter last year taking 10.3 percent of the market share. The company has seen an 86.6 percent YoY increase in shipments.

Apple moved to the third position, IDC reports, with 44.2 million shipments and 14.1 percent market share. In the same quarter last year, Apple shipped 37.6 million units and enjoyed 13.6 percent market share. Oppo and Vivo took the third and fourth position in IDC's list with 32.8 million and 31.6 million shipments, respectively. Both the smartphone vendors raked in 10.5 percent and 10.1 percent market share each.

In the markets where Huawei and LG are strongest (China and US), companies face different chances of gaining market share. In the US, IDC reports that Motorola, TCL, and OnePlus experienced year-over-year gains beyond what they have seen in recent years due to LG's departure. In China, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and Apple continued to gain from Huawei's rapid decline.

IDC reports that Chinese brand Realme saw the fastest year-over-year growth among the top 10 at 149 percent and more than three quarters of its volume coming from outside China.

Xiaomi remains on top in India smartphone market, OnePlus dominates premium: Counterpoint - The Indian Express

India’s smartphone market continued to grow, despite the challenges posed by the second Covid-19 wave, and crossed 33 million shipments in the second quarter of 2021, according to research firm Counterpoint Research. While Xiaomi remains the number one player in the overall smartphone market, OnePlus leads the premium segment (Rs 30,000 and above) with nearly 34 percent share.

According to Counterpoint, India’s smartphone shipments grew 82 per cent year-on-year in the second quarter, but the market declined 14 per cent sequentially given a drop in consumer demand because of the Covid-19 wave during the months of April and May.

“Smartphone shipments witnessed low volumes during April and May. However, the market saw a pent-up demand in June as restrictions were lifted and stores started to reopen. Offline-centric brands were more affected during April and May as consumers were preferring online channels for purchases,” Prachir Singh, Senior Research Analyst said.

However, he added that brands like Xiaomi and Realme were able to retain volumes thanks to their better online reach. The Indian smartphone market also continues to be dominated by the Chinese players, which now have a 79 per cent overall share.

“The Redmi 9 series, as well as the Redmi Note 10 series, drove the shipments for Xiaomi while online-heavy Galaxy M-series and F-series drove the shipments for Samsung. The share of 5G smartphones is constantly increasing, crossing 14 per cent in the June-ended quarter. Realme was the top 5G smartphone brand with a 23 per cent share, followed by OnePlus,” Monika Sharma, Research Analyst said.

.

Xiaomi was the leading individual vendor with a 28 per cent market share driven by the Redmi 9 series and Redmi Note 10 series. According to Counterpoint, four out of five top-selling models were from Xiaomi; this includes the Redmi 9A, Redmi 9 Power, Redmi Note 10, and Redmi 9. The three top models had more than a million shipments. However, the budget Redmi 9A remains the best-selling model for the last three quarters.

It also looks like Xiaomi’s efforts in the premium category are starting to pay off with the company capturing more than 7 per cent of the segment, its highest-ever in terms of volumes. Counterpoint also notes that Poco saw triple-digit growth in the quarter. While Poco is a separate brand from Xiaomi India, market research firms such as Counterpoint, tend to view them as a sub-brand.

Samsung holds steady at number two in the Indian smartphone market, driven by the Galaxy M and F series, which contributed to 66 per cent of its shipments. It also reached its highest-ever online share this quarter. Vivo was number three with 61 per cent yearly growth and its share in the premium segment rose to 12 per cent. The V21, X60, and iQoo 7 series drove shipments for the brand.

Realme was the number four brand on the list with 140 per cent yearly growth and the brand’s aggressive 5G push has helped it grow further. It also became the fastest brand to reach 50 million cumulative smartphone shipments in India, according to Counterpoint.

Oppo was number five in the list with 103 per cent yearly growth driven by phones like OPPO F19 Pro Plus which was the top 5G smartphone model in the Rs 20,000-Rs 30,000 price band.

In the premium segment, Apple saw 144 per cent growth. It is the leader in the ultra-premium segment which is phone above Rs 45,000 and has more than 49 per cent share. Counterpoint says that the strong demand for iPhone 11, and iPhone 12 drove this growth.

Meanwhile, OnePlus saw nearly 200 per cent yearly growth, which was primarily driven by its OnePlus 9 series that launched in May.  OnePlus captured three spots in the top five smartphone models in India’s premium market and was the top 5G smartphone brand in the premium segment with 48 per cent share.

In the affordable segment, the Transsion Group brands, which includes itel, Infinix and TECNO continue to see triple-digit growth and control nearly 7 per cent of the overall smartphone market. itel remained the top smartphone brand in the sub-Rs 6,000 price band and collectively the Transsion brands have a 29 per cent share in the sub-Rs 8,000 segments.
