Over 10 Million Android Users Affected by New Grifthorse Malware, but What Is It? - News18

Grifthorse Trojan on Android (Image: Zimperium)

Some of the Android apps infected with GriftHorse malware include Handy Translator Pro, Heart Rate and Pulse Tracker, and My Chat Translator. Users in India are also affected.

Over 10 million Android smartphones have been reportedly affected by a new malware called GriftHorse. Discovered by researchers at mobile security firm Zimperium, the research suggests the threat group had been running the campaign since November 2020. The research firm notes that the GriftHorse malware was distributed through both Google Play and third-party application stores and stole “hundreds of millions of Euros" from affected users. The malware disguised itself within apps’ codes and tricked users to click on fishy links in order to redirect money into their accounts. Zimperium research claims these malicious Android apps appear “harmless" at first in terms of their app description and requested permissions; however, they essentially trick users to subscribe to premium services without their knowledge and consent to extract money.

In a blog post, the company says the malicious apps pose a threat to all Android devices by functioning as a Trojan and charging a premium amounting to around EUR 36 (roughly Rs 3,100) per month. The campaign has reportedly targeted millions of users from over 70 countries by serving selective malicious pages to users based on the geo-location of their IP address with the local language. Due to the distribution of these campaigns in local languages, the attack appears to have a higher success rate. The GriftHorse campaign is one of the most “widespread campaigns" the zLabs threat research team has witnessed in 2021, the company notes. GriftHorse essentially sends sophisticated popups and notifications, promising various prizes and special offers. Users who tap on these notifications are redirected to an online page where they are asked to confirm their phone number in order to access the offer. However, users are subscribing themselves to special SMS services that charge a premium - later redirected to the operator’s account.

Some of the popular apps, infected with GriftHorse horse malware include Handy Translator Pro, Heart Rate and Pulse Tracker, Geospot: GPS Location Tracker, iCare – Find Location, and My Chat Translator. According to the company, users in India are also affected. Zimperium, which is a member of the App Defense Alliance, said it contacted Google about all the GriftHorse infected apps, which have now been removed from the Play Store. However, these apps may still exist on third-party app stores.

Over 60% of PC users don't know about Windows 11 - TechSpot

WTF?! We’re less than one week away from the official release of Windows 11, so how excited is the general PC-using public about the latest operating system’s arrival? Not very, according to a new survey. Around six out of every ten respondents (62%) had no idea Windows 11 was almost here, and 59% said they either weren’t sure if they’ll upgrade or plan on sticking with their current OS.

The survey, carried out by Savings.com, asked 1,042 current Windows users about Windows 11 to gauge awareness and excitement. Microsoft probably won’t be happy to learn that only 38% of those who took part admitted to knowing it was due to be released. Older users were more aware of its impending arrival: just 28% of those between 18 and 24 knew it would land soon, whereas 56% of those over 55 knew it was coming.

Of that minority of people who know about Windows 11, only 41% said they are planning on upgrading. Fourteen percent said they would not upgrade, and 45% remain unsure.

We all know the farcical situation surrounding Windows 11 compatibility issues, especially when it comes to TPM 2.0, which Microsoft confirmed is require in all Windows 11 machines, even virtual ones. CPU-wise, support reaches back to Intel’s 8th-generations processors, some 7th-gen models, and AMD processors dating to the second-generation Ryzen chips.

Compatibility issues mean that two out of three respondents were unsure if their PCs would be able to run the next Microsoft OS (without workarounds). Thankfully, the Redmond firm recently relaunched its Windows 11 compatibility tool so people will know for certain if their machines can handle it.

Delving into Windows 11’s abilities, the survey asked what people thought would be its most exciting feature. The most popular answer, given by 38% of people, was “not sure,” which again is not what Microsoft wants to hear. This was followed by the ability to run Android apps (14%), new appearance (13%), game-boosting abilities (13%), and additional security features (11%).

Microsoft hasn’t been advertising Windows 11 very heavily in the run-up to its official roll-out on October 5, certainly not in the way it did with Windows 95, Windows 7, Windows 10, etc. In the latter case, it finally reached Microsoft’s target of one billion active devices last year. With Windows 11 being incompatible on so many machines, one must wonder how long it will take the new OS to get even close to that number.

Windows 11 has been available in several different versions to those on the Windows Insider program for a while now. The free upgrade will begin rolling out to eligible Windows 10 PCs on October 5, and PCs that come pre-loaded with Windows 11 will be available to buy on the same date.

In other surprising survey results this week, it turns out that many students don’t know what PC files and folders are.

Switch Pro: Nintendo swiftly denies claims 11 studios are working on 4K games - Video Games Chronicle

Nintendo has moved to swiftly deny a new report claiming that at least 11 studios have 4K Switch development kits.

Bloomberg claims that at least 11 companies, including Zynga, have software toolkits provided by Nintendo that feature support for 4K graphics.

The article claims that by the time Nintendo had officially revealed the Switch OLED in July, it had already handed out 4K development kits to third-party studios and asked them to start making 4K-supported games.

It also claims that Nintendo still plans to release an enhanced 4K-supported ‘Switch Pro’, planned for late 2022 at the earliest.

Switch OLED trailer

In a rare move for the company, Nintendo’s Japanese arm promptly took to Twitter to publicly deny the report. The company’s official Japanese corporate account posted a tweet just three hours after the article’s publication, claiming that it was false.

“A news report on Sept. 30, 2021 falsely claims that Nintendo is supplying tools to drive game development for a Nintendo Switch with 4K support,” it read.

“To ensure correct understanding among our investors and customers, we want to clarify that this report is not true.

“We also want to restate that, as we announced in July, we have no plans for any new model other than Nintendo Switch – OLED Model, which will launch on October 8, 2021.”

Bloomberg’s report includes information from Zynga employees, who were asked not to be identified. After it was publisher, however, a Zynga spokeperson told Bloomberg: “To clarify, Zynga does not have a 4K developer kit from Nintendo.”

Nintendo announced the new Nintendo Switch OLED model in July, with confirmation of a larger 7-inch OLED screen and other smaller additions such as a wide adjustable stand, a new dock and enhanced audio.

However, there was no mention of 4K resolution support or increased hardware power, as had been heavily reported before the system’s announcement.

Millions of old phones, laptops, and smart gadgets could stop working later this week for a weird reason - washingtonexaminer.com

The internet connectivity on older tech devices and smart gadgets could stop working on Thursday after a key digital certificate required to access websites safely expires.

Let's Encrypt, a nonprofit organization that is the largest issuer of digital certificates — which encrypts and protects the connection between devices and websites on the internet — will be forced to expire one of its most popular digital certificates, the IdentTrust DST Root CA X3, on Sept. 30.

This means several phones, computers, video game consoles, smart gadgets, and "Internet of Things" devices bought before 2017 that use the Let’s Encrypt digital certificate in question, and haven't updated their software since then, could face significant issues connecting to the internet.

The problem will primarily affect popular devices, such as iPhones running iOS 9 and below, Android phones running below the 2.3.6 software, Windows computers running software prior to XP SP3, Sony's PS3, and PS4 game consoles, and the Nintendo 3DS.

“Certain older devices from 2016 and before and any gadget that has the word ‘smart’ in it that requires internet connectivity, like certain TVs, bulbs, fridges, and home control apps, could be affected by this certificate expiry,” said security researcher and cybersecurity expert Scott Helme. “It’s not clear how big of a problem this will be, but something somewhere will certainly break. There will be a bunch of fires tomorrow, and we’ll just have to put them out."

STATES TAKE LEAD FROM CONGRESS ON REINING IN BIG TECH

This problem has flown under the radar of many manufacturers, including Big Tech companies Apple, Google, Sony, and Microsoft — none of which have made announcements to customers about potential issues, Helme said.

He added this is one of the first major digital certificates to expire since the advent of the internet in the 1980s. Therefore, there is no precedent for how to solve the problem besides updating the software on devices.

“There have been no squeaky wheels, so no one has ever oiled it. It’s a brand-new problem,” Helme said.

Planned obsolescence, which makes tech devices stop working properly after a certain number of years, is part of the reason such problems occur.

Many tech companies, such as Apple, do not promise users a smooth experience for customers after they have owned a device for several years.

“Some companies have been proactive about educating customers about this problem, and some companies got lazy and didn’t do their homework and expect customers to figure it out on their own if issues start occurring on older devices,” said Leonard Grove, CEO of SSL.com, a well-known private commercial provider of digital certificates.

Although there is a significant risk of millions of devices not working on Thursday, some internet security experts say it could affect every device in a different fashion.

“We just don’t know what exactly will happen, it could be like Y2K in 2000 with a big warning and nothing happens, or you could see a lot of people rushing to fix their devices or getting new ones,” Grove added.

Huawei Mate V clamshell scheduled to arrive this year - GSMArena.com news - GSMArena.com

The Huawei Mate X series delivers foldable devices that unfold into a tablet, but now the company is planning to introduce the Mate V which will be a clamshell akin to the Moto Razr and Galaxy Z Flip3.

Huawei Mate X2 4G Huawei Mate X2 4G

The Huawei Mate V (using the letter V which looks like a folded phone) will be powered by a Kirin 9000 chipset, which is hardly a surprise - it is the latest and most powerful SoC by HiSilicon, Huawei’s in-house chip division.

What we don’t know is what kind of mobile networks it would support since the Mate X2 is currently available both in LTE-only and 5G variants.

We hope Huawei will give us a sneak peek of this new phone at the October 21 event, and it would be a great accomplishment to see the final product being launched. Although seeing how it's the first we hear of such phone we probably have more waiting to do.

Google Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro Price, Colour Options Surface Online; Launch Date Tipped Again - Gadgets 360

Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro launch seems imminent as its pricing and some of the colour options have surfaced online. The two flagship smartphones have previously been tipped to launch on October 19 with sales beginning on October 28, something the latest leak echoes. However, the tech giant has confirmed other specifications of the smartphone and has also shared some images of the smartphones. The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will be powered by a new Tensor chipset that Google has developed especially for the Pixel 6 series smartphones.

Google Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro price (expected)

YouTuber M. Brandon Lee (@thisistechtoday) cites people familiar with the matter to claim the Google Pixel 6 will be priced at EUR 649 (roughly Rs. 56,200) while the Pixel 6 Pro will retail for EUR 899 (roughly Rs. 77,900). Even Google's Rick Osterloh mentioned that the two smartphones will have premium pricing and the vanilla Pixel 6 will be positioned in the premium segment. In comparison, the Google Pixel 5 was priced at EUR 629 (roughly Rs. 54,500) when it was launched in October last year. There is no information on the pricing of the Pixel 6 series in other regions.

Lee's sources mention that the regular Google Pixel 6 will be offered in two colour options — Carbon and Fog. The Carbon colour variant is speculated to be a black colour while the Fog colour variant is tipped to be a green colour. Lee's sources didn't mention the name of the colours for the Pixel 6 Pro and it is only shown as a single variant. It is said that in some regions the Pixel 6 series may only get three variants for both smartphones, combined.

The launch date for the Google Pixel 6 series has been tipped again in the latest leak. According to Lee's sources, the two smartphones will be announced on October 19 with the release date being set for October 28. This falls in line with many previous reports that have mentioned the same announcement and launch dates for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro.

'Google' the Most Searched Term on Rival Microsoft Bing, Says Alphabet Inc Lawyer - News18

Google has claimed that ‘Google’ is the most searched term on Microsoft search engine Bing. The statement was made by Alphabet Inc unit lawyer Alfonso Lamadrid at the European Union’s General Court in Luxembourg on Tuesday, the second day of the weeklong hearing in a 2018 antitrust penalty case. “We have submitted evidence showing that the most common search query on Bing is by far Google," a Bloomberg report quoted Lamadrid as saying. As per the report, Google made the argument while asking that EU judges strike down the antitrust order against it, as well as the record five billion dollar fine. The European Commission had imposed the penalty on Google, alleging that it had unfairly pushed its search engine on Android mobile phones. It had said that Google was attempting to stifle competition and create a near-monopoly.

In response, Lamadrid argued that people chose to use Google and were not forced to do the same. He claimed that Google’s general search market share aligned with consumer surveys which showed that 95 per cent users preferred Google over rival search engines.

As per an Associated Press report, this was one of three antitrust penalties totaling more than $8 billion that the commission hit Google with between 2017 and 2019. The others focused on shopping and search, and the California company is appealing all three. While the penalties involved huge sums, critics point out that Google can easily afford them and that the fines haven’t done much to widen competition. In its original decision, the commission said Google’s practices restrict competition and reduce choices for consumers. Google, however, plans to argue that free and open source Android has led to lower-priced phones and spurred competition with its chief rival, Apple.

“Android has created more choice for everyone, not less, and supports thousands of successful businesses in Europe and around the world. This case isn’t supported by the facts or the law,” the company said when the five-day hearing opened at the European Court of Justice’s General Court, as per the AP report.

Recently, Google abused the dominant position of its Android operating system in India, using its “huge financial muscle" to illegally hurt competitors, the country’s antitrust authority found in a report on its two-year probe seen by Reuters. Alphabet’s Google reduced “the ability and incentive of device manufacturers to develop and sell devices operating on alternative versions of Android," says the June report by the Competition Commission of India’s (CCI) investigations unit.

Get set, this new WhatsApp feature coming to your phone soon - HT Tech

WhatsApp has been working on a number of key features that are aimed at helping its users make the most of its platform. For instance, it is planning to replace the existing format of voice messages with voice waveforms. It has also started prompting its users to join the multi-device beta mode that would let the Facebook-owned messaging app test its upcoming Multi-Device feature in real-world scenarios before rolling it out to all the users globally. In addition to that, another WhatsApp feature that has just come into the news is the one that is called Message Reactions.

For those, who haven’t been following developments around this upcoming WhatsApp feature, when rolled out, Message Reactions will enable users to respond to a chat with a select bunch of emojis. At the moment, WhatsApp users can respond to messages with separate messages containing text, videos, audio, stickers, GIFs and emojis. However, it is not possible to respond to a message the way it is possible in Facebook Messenger or in Instagram.

With its Message Reaction feature, WhatsApp wants to change that and give users another way of responding to a message. Reports suggest that users can pick from up to seven emojis, which can be replaced with a set of different emojis from WhatsApp emoji library.

Now, a new report by WABetaInfo says that WhatsApp is planning to place these Message Reactions towards the right corner of a message soon. What’s more? The report says that the background colour of the bubble reaction may be different from that of the messages. WhatsApp, as of now, uses a combination of Green and deep Grey as the background colour in chat bubbles. The blog site says that WhatsApp could use Black coloured bubbles to distinguish between chat bubbles and message reaction bubbles.

Additionally, the screenshot of the feature shared by the blog site also shows that the message reaction bubbles will be much smaller in size compared to the chat bubbles and while the message bubbles come with curved edges, message reaction bubbles will come in a pill-shaped format.

All said and done, WhatsApp’s upcoming Message Reaction feature is being developed for both the company’s iOS and Android-based apps. That said, there is no word on when WhatsApp’s upcoming Message Reaction feature will arrive in the company’s beta apps. But given the updates, it should arrive in WhatsApp beta for Android and WhatsApp beta for iOS sooner than later.
