Apple’s first augmented reality and virtual reality headset is one of many products that are expected next year. There is already a big heap of rumours that predict what this wearable will be like, and most of them come from the prolific analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has a good track record for leaking Apple-related information. Kuo now has new details about the Apple headset, hinting at a not-so-heavy unit.
In his latest note obtained by 9to5Mac, Kuo predicted that the first-generation AR and VR headset by Apple will weigh between 300 and 400 grams, which is lighter than most headsets on the market. For instance, the weight of the Oculus Quest 2 headset is around 532 grams. And this weight is favourable considering customers will get high-end features but not at the expense of heft.
But Apple seemingly does not want to take risks, which is why, according to Kuo, a lighter version is already under development. This could be the second-generation model of Apple’s AR and VR headset that will be lighter than the first-generation model and feature a faster processor, new battery technology, and an updated industrial design.
This means we are looking at a weight under 300 grams, and this could be a big breakthrough in advanced headset models that have traditionally been on the heavier side. And customers may be looking forward to using a headset that would not be a hassle when wearing.
Kuo has said that the first-generation headset with mixed reality - which combines augmented reality and virtual reality - will be high-end and will sport features such as a high-resolution display for each eye and a performance on par with the M1 processor inside MacBooks. And with great performance and features, comes a great price, which Kuo believes may be around $1,000, which is roughly Rs 76,000.
Kuo’s prediction outlines that the first-generation headset will be aimed at an “early adopter” market initially, but its sales are expected to reach 2.5 to 3.5 million units by the end of 2023. And then, in the first half of 2024, Apple is likely to prepare for the launch of the second-generation headset that Kuo said will be lighter. Apple expects demand for its MR headset to grow with additions of more features and refinement of the existing ones, to around 100 million units.
Apple has not said anything official about its mixed reality headset yet, but it is an open secret. Apple has over 1,000 engineers working on the project and their first commercial product will pave the way for Apple’s next wearable, which may be glasses, just like Google Glasses. However, Kuo and other analysts have said Apple’s AR glasses are distant right now and may not arrive before 2025.
