Previously, we have heard several anecdotes of Apple Watch making an early diagnosis of a life-threatening disease, or calling health authorities in times of emergencies, when the patient was unconscious, and the smart watch continues to do its ‘life saving’ job with due diligence it seems.
The Apple Watch saved the life of a dentist named Nitesh Chopra, a resident of Haryana’s Yamuna Nagar last Saturday. Chopra experienced chest pains, and on conducting an ECG with his Apple Watch on March 12, the doctor learned that he had 99.9% blockage of arteries.
He quickly went to the doctor, and eventually had a stent installed in his heart through surgery, and returned safely home, after a short stay at the hospital. The doctor’s wife, Neha, who had received the watch as a gift a year ago, said that she feels lucky that they had the watch. The watch had been giving indications that Chopra had arrhythmia for a while, however, the couple ignored the signs because they assumed that since Chopra is a young man in his 30s, he would not be prone to such a heart disease.
On March 12, the watch began sending repeated alerts, which got the couple worried, and they rushed to the hospital where the diagnosis was made.
A News18 report said that that the doctor’s wife also wrote a thank-you note to Apple CEO Tim Cook after the watch saved her husband’s life. “We reached the hospital only because of the technology provided by you and he is now fine and healthy. I wish you lots of love and happiness and thank you for giving my husband his life," she wrote in the email.
Cook also took the opportunity to revert to Neha and wrote, “I’m so glad you sought medical attention and received the treatment you needed. Thanks for sharing your story with us. Be well. Best, Tim."
Dr. Chopra revealed that before this incident he had viewed the watch as nothing more than a fashion accessory, and is amazed at its life saving act. Once the couple were in the hospital, they kept checking the Apple Watch readings in comparison to the hospital equipment readings and found it to be completely accurate.
Chopra said that he would definitely recommend the gadget to everyone who cares about their health.
