iPhone SE 2022 is in the house for review and here is what you get with the box. Have a quick look at the most affordable 5G iPhone you can buy today.
The new iPhone SE 2022 is easily the most interesting Apple products over the last few years. With rumours suggesting wild “iPhone XR-like” upgrades to the SE in 2022 and other suggesting unbelievably low price, the new iPhone SE proved them all wrong. Starting at Rs. 43,900, it pushes the lowest price you have to pay for a brand new iPhone in 2022. And on paper, the changes are minimal, despite Apple showing love major changes over the outgoing iPhone SE from 2020.
So, how does it all seem in the real world, especially in India? We just got our hands on a brand “new” iPhone SE in the “new” Midnight colour variant that will be sold on India starting March 18. Other than the Midnight (very dark blue from the iPhone 13), you can also get it in Starlight (sort of bright white), and the Product Red (or just Red). The base variant still offers 64GB storage, while the other two variants have 128GB as well as 256GB storage options. The core features remain unchanged.

The iPhone SE 2022 gets the same treatment as the iPhone 13 series when it comes to its packaging. Yes, the box is slim owing to the missing charging adapter; something that the 2020 model came with at launch. You get the standard USB-C to Lightning cable, and a bunch of Apple documents, a single Apple sticker, and the SIM ejector pin. The phone itself comes wrapped in a plastic wrapping that has all the buttons and crucial bits marked out. The box itself isn’t wrapped in a plastic anymore.
Since the 2022 model is physically the same with similar dimensions as the 2020 model, you can buy any of the covers that are compatible with the older one. Apple has, however, dropped the Silicon cases in Midnight, Abyss Blue, Product Red, and Chalk Pink.
iPhone SE 2022 setup
The iPhone SE 2022 is no different to set up than any other iPhone running on the latest iOS 15. You can either set it up manually like a new phone, or you can import all of your data from the older iPhone by the pairing process. After a brief setup process, your iPhone SE welcomes you to its home screen at the touch of its Home button.
iPhone SE 2022 features at a glance
The variant we have here is the 256GB iPhone SE bathed in the Midnight colour. This is a slightly bluish shade over the black shade we saw on the older 2020 model. The rest of the layout remains the same — Home button on the bottom bezel, loudspeaker at the bottom, power button to the right, volume keys to the left, Ring slider also on the left, and the Lightning port at the bottom.
The iPhone SE boots into iOS 15.4 out of the box. It uses the new A15 Bionic chip from the iPhone 13 and even brings support for 5G connectivity. However, in the current situation, there’s no 5G network in India to test this out. Apple also claims more battery life on the new model over the 4G variant. This is something I am interested to check out eagerly, since the iPhone SE 2020 could barely make it to the end of the day on a single charge.
Apple also claims improved camera performances with the new chip in place, despite using the same camera hardware as the iPhone 8. You don’t get an ultra-wide rear camera, no Face ID verification, no notch; none of the modern iPhone amenities.
Over the course of the next few days, we will put the iPhone SE 2022 to test and determine whether this sub-Rs. 50,000 smartphone is worth considering over its modern Android rivals.
